DULL RACING AT BELMONT Beldame Handicap Won by Bank ¬ sia Best Contest of Afternoon Steeplechase to Decisive Thun ¬ derstorm and Regal Lodge Easy Victors NEW YORK N Y June 9 Belmont had its dullest racing of the present meeting this after ¬ noon The course was fast enough and the air inviting to speed but the horses which enoble the best of turf sport were not out to contend in the six races offered Scratches did not improve or refine the racing clusters either eitherThe The Beldame Handicap at threequarters of a mile round the turn furnished the best action of the afternoon It was for fillies and mares named after one of the peerless ones of her time and fell to youth and beauty Major Cochrans Banksia won it She is one of the finest fillies in training anil a credit to her New York breeder Banksia wasnt the favored one in public esteem Step Lightly was scratched and in her absence Elected II considered best at the weights and next to her that elderly jade Enfilade which is not herself just yet but is likely to be so at an early day Pen Rose too was thought to be a factor The two oldsters got off flying and ran themselves into dullness with a front quarter in 23 and a half in 10 10Once Once in the straight Kennedy who had kept the beautiful Cochran filly at the inside rail he rode her judiciously and well throughout brought Bunk nia up anil tttitbo sixteenth was with the tiring leaders Still inside and running straight and truly though doing her best Banksia headed Pen Rose and Elected II and won by half a length in 111 Pen Rosts a tired mare was bearing out at the finish two lengths before Elected II which was always outrun outrunNext Next in interest and first from a monetary point was the International Steeplechase Handicap over the twomile course Run as Berrington The Widener filly Bountiful did not lke the straight course and ran wildly At the main track entrance she wabbled and stuck her toes into the ground and at the end of the stand fairly bolted as if seeing shadows Master Zoellcr had an awful time with her herElderly Elderly horses of the mild winning clan were in the fourth race at a mile and Thunderstorm favored in what speculation there was won easily He wasnt hurried while Dobadou and Genie W ran the first threequarters in front and in 111 raced wide on the turn outside his horses caught the leaders below the eighth post and won with some ¬ thing to spare from Genie W and Debadou Carpet Sweeper was considered to have a great chance and extensively backed The fast pace settled the Lady from Virginia which has been working exceptionally well She could never keep up upThe The fifth race for selling platers had a shabby field with Regal Lodge standing out The race was shabby too Old Snapdragon II dwelt as the barrier
