LATONIAS SUPERB RACING Two Rich Stake Races Draw a Great Attendance Marjorie Hynes Takes the En ¬ quirer Handicap and John Finn Wins the Harold Stakes LATONIA Kyi June 18 Latonias twin fea ¬ tures today the Enquirer Handicap nt a mile and a sixteenth and the Harold Stakes for twoyearold colts were productive of a pair of contests that rivaled tho best ever staged in Kentucky and were fitting to the occasion The sport this afternoon was witnessed by an assemblage far in excess of the largest that lias been on the picturesque course this year yearIn In the Enquirer Handicap even with its five withdrawals from the original list of probable starters eight of the best in these parts were left to go and its running brought a surprise in the victory of Harned Brothers Marjorie Hynes Her triumph was only by a head over the fast but un ¬ certain Sands of Pleasure with Best Pal in third place a substantial margin in front of the others Lillcy on the winner rode her faultlessly keeping her a closeup follower despite the sizzling pace set by Distinction and Best Pal The McDowell filly relinquished command after leading for threequar ¬ ters at which point Best Pal took up the burden and when straightened away for the stretch drive appeared the winner but Marjorie Hynes kept to her task in a game nnd steady fashion and over ¬ hauled the Bradley representative In the last six ¬ teenth But at this juncture Sands of Pleasure loomed with bis menacing challenge and a royal battle ensued to the finish the filly holding on stubbornly to beat the veteran by a scant head The net value of the purse to the winner totaled 0005 and in addition her owner received a costly and ornamental trophy the gift of Mr Edward B McLean owner of the Enquirer for which the race was named M Harned part owner of the filly received the trophy and the presentation of it was made by Mayor John Calvin of Cincinnati who in the course of his remarks paid tribute to the sport the gameness of the thoroughbred and the thrills derived from such a sterling contest as that in the Enquirer Handicap HandicapANOTHER ANOTHER FOR CONSISTENT GUVNOR GUVNORThe The consistent Guvnor added another victory to his score by landing front in tlie opener for which several others were held in more favor Cozette followed him to the finish as in their preceding meeting meetingJ J C Stone was another to repeat a victory when lie landed the mile and a quarter dash Ho won by virtue of Pools superior horsemanship over Fields astride Wave WaveGranite Granite Ware carrying the silks of W V Thraves had an easy time of it in the juvenile maiden dash Deep Sinker landing in second place and Suave Prince third thirdBuddie Buddie ICcan racing in his best style was lucky to win the sixth race for had Marvin May not been guided as wide as he was on the turns during the race he would have won wonThe The Harold Stakes with its history and traditions dating back since 1SSS when the Latonia track made its first bid for popular favor is regarded annually as fnrniBhing a guide to the champion western colt and this year was no exception for John Finn and Rockminister the two outstanding choices were doing battle for supremacy and a right upble battle did they engage in and though John Finn was the victor by a matter of inches the question of superiority is still in dispute between supporters of the pair The Rockmiuister adherents argue that John Finn was away from the post in full stride and that Rockminister was forced to travel a bit wide The John Finn supporters counter with the rejoiner He won didnt he and did everything required of him himWASHINGTON WASHINGTON SHOWS PROMISE PROMISEThe The sendoff was marred by the refusal of Lord Allen and Lucknow to join with the others in getting away from the post Pool alert on John Finn on tlie outside had his mount going in a jiffy and showed the way by several lengths in tlie first eighth with Rockminister Washington nnd Quince Garden in close pursuit Washington was forced back slightly in tho next eighth but ROCK minister went gamely after the leader and whon straightened away for the stretch battle both riders Lyke and Pool gave their best to willingly responc ing mounts and it was practically a case of meas ¬ uring strides on even terms through the last six ¬ teenth John Finn ultimately getting to the finis a nose in advance Washington was again going fast at the end and it is just barely possible that with a few more races Washington will reverse decisions with the pair Lord Allen after getting practically left closed a big cap Tlie running of the raco indicated that tlie colts do not measure up to the standard of the twoyearold fillies The net value of the raco to the winner was 0140 0140The The concluding race fell to Pastoureau which just got up in time to overhaul the excessively used Mint Cat In tlie early running of tlie race By Golly threatened a runaway and took n twelve lengths lead over the others Mint Cat at this time was in last place but before reaching the stretch he was in front the effort causing him to be well spent and he was a ready victim to Pas toureaus rush rushArthur Arthur B Hancock the wellknown breeder was among the visitors and he felt highly jubilant over tlie sale of Playfellow and Knobbie for the reported high prices Hancock sold Playfellow Knobbie Sporting Blood Sailing B and five other yearlings to Mr Johnson of the Quincy Stable StableA A private car with a party of about thirtyfive of Louisvilles leading citizens came from the Falls City to enjoy tlie days racing The delegation made up an aggregation that required six extra railroad cars for their accommodation accommodationFormer Former Congressman Joseph L Rhinock at one time extensively interested in the Latonia track came from New York to view the sport
