SAM DARLINGS GREAT HORSES Galtes More Slieve Gallion and Ard Patrick Grcat Trio of Dead Trajner BY E E COUSSELL COUSSELLLONDON LONDON Eiig May 27 The news of the death of the extrainer Sam Darling was received with general regret though it had been known for a long time that he was hopelessly ill It is no exag ¬ geration to state that few of the presentday train ¬ ers could surpass the skill of the exMaster of Bcckhamplim In his day the ring had good rea ¬ son to know his winners weru not unexpected when they came al mg Sam Darling who was GO years of age died Monday May 1G Darlings father destined his bey for the law but that proved distasteful and lie wns apprenticed to the late Teddy Weaver Darling bought Acrobat in 1875 for 125 and riiiing himself won a number of races with that horse About 1S82 he settled at Bccklmmpton where he trained the Derby winners Galtce More and Ard 1a trick as well as iSlieve Uallion which wvn the Two Thousand Guineas and WildUower which won the St Leger At the end of his training career he was sold to the Russian government for 100000 Lord Rosebery thought lie had bred the best colt of his life in Velasquez which had a brilliant career as a twoyearold He did not meet Galtee More until the Middle Park Plate when in heavy going Darlings colt made a hack of Velasquez and coiiliimcd the running in Hie classic races next year Judging by the standard of Velasquez Galtee More must have been one of the best horses that ever raced in England Darling however was more In ¬ clined to regard his halfbrother Ard PaYrTclc1 as the better hojse Perhaps it was because of the way in which he defeated Sceptre and Rock Sand in the Eclipse Stakes Hu was sold to the German government for 100000 100000Slieve Slieve Gallion after he won the Two Thousand Guineas became favcrite for the Derby but he failed to stay and was beaten by Orby and Wool winder He was eventually fcold to Austria where he became a good sire Kilcock one of the fastest handicappcrs of his day was another colt which helped to make Darling famous famousThe The last great horse he had in his charge was WillQiiyx Indeed Darling named his home Will onyx House and it was there that he passed away AVillonyx of course was one of the great ¬ est stayers we have ever known and on ground as hard as a turnpike road won such races as the Chester Cup Ascot Gold Cup and the Cesarwitch in 1Jll 1JllSince Since he retired from training ten years ago Sam Darling had continued his farming operations on a large scale and he was extremely successful His son Fred is now training for Sir James Bu ¬ chanan at Bcckhampton and S H Darling is one of the youngest and most successful trainers at Newmarket Saui Darling wrote a book of remi ¬ niscences which were interesting to a point He dealt more with the life of his family so perhaps the book was somewhat lacking in intimate infor ¬ mation of the great horses which were in his charge The Kings trainer Richard Marsh is married to a daughter of the late Sam Darling
