. GERMAN DERBY WON BY OMEN Seventeen Colts Race for Valuable Prize Worth SO.OQO Great Crowd Sees It. BERLIN", July 15. The German Derby, for tllree-year-olds, value 0,000, was run on the Horn track, for the fifty-third time, June 20. Xever in its history have there been so many people ht"a German Derby, aiid automobiles were innumerable. The pari-mutuels showed a turriover of ,V,S45,-070 on that day, and of that amount 42,390nvas inveoted on the Derby alone, which is a - record. The favorite for the race, Graf Ferry, disappointed sadly, although, the public held the- distance too far for him, but Omen, thc- son of Xuage, was festively decorated with the blue ribbon after winning the race. Already, as a two-year-old, he proved one of the best and fastest, and on May 7 he won easily the Dresdener Jubllaeums Prize from Hallunkc, which already had established a reputation by winning the two previous stake Taces. The start of the Derby was perfect, as all the horses behaTed exceedingly well. Graf Ferry went immediately to the front and was setting a terrific pace until the second turn wasreat?hecl. when the fast pace began to tell and lie dropped back, and Omen took advantage of it and was then leading, looking all over the -winner. At" the last turn only Graf Ferry, Omen, Osslan and Da-menweg figured. Soon Damenweg dropped out- of contention, but Perikles was gradually improving his position. The end, however, was too near; .although witli a desperate effort his rider, Rasten-berger, urged him on and tin, but the best he could do was to land ih third place. Cohsulerlrig his slow start he showed the best race, and in a few more strides would have w0n Ossian, in the strong hands of Brown, raced courageously, but the pace was too fast and he weakened and only just succeeded in landing second place. " Omen equaled the record time of 2:32. The Derby has been won thirty-six times by Geriuau horses; sixteen times the great prize1 went to Austria-Hungary aud once Denmark was the proud victor.
