LA T0NIA CHAMPIONSHIP TO DA Y SMALL BUT SELECT FIELD TO CONTEST FOR THE RICH PRIZE THAT GOES TO THE WINNER-GREY LAG THE FAVORITE The Latonia Championship Stakes will be run at Latonia today. Out of the 320 original nominations of which 221 paid the second payment of 25 each, and the eighty-eight that made i.hc third payment of 0 each only seven arc named to strive for this rich prize. Such is one of the attendant uncertainties of breeding, raising, training and racing of thoroughbreds. The hopes of yesterday are often the disappointments of today. Certainly no owner ever had better reasons of entertaining high hopes of capturing this great three-year-old race than H. P. Whitney did when he nominated Tryster, Broomspun, Exodus, Ararat, Dartmoor, Dis Done and Parader. But today he is without representation. The last ray of hope of the Whitney connections disappeared when the beautiful Celt colt Touch Me Not developed a quarter crack at Belmont Park Wednesday and had to be declared out of the big race. This Greentree Stable color bearer, after his impressive victory over Grey Lag in the Lawrence Realization Stakes, revived the hopes of the Whitney people and was expected to make amends for the failure of Tryster and his stablematcs. However, the field for the Latonia Championship is a good one. Grey Lag will carry the Rancocas colors and will rule favorite. He and Sporting Blood represent the East, while the Bradley entry, Black Servant and Behave Yourself, together with Rangoon, are the hopes of the Kentuckians. Humphrey and White Star are the other two entries. The race is at one and three-quarters miles, and if all seven horses start the gross value of it will be 33,225, the winner receiving approximately 25,000. His many and notable successes are well known to all followers of racing. He has been unplaced but twice in twenty-five starts, of which he won thirteen and 78,798 in his two years on the turf. Behave Your-selfs principal claim to fame was winning the Kentucky Derby, but he has done little since, his stable companion Black Servant being held in higher esteem by his own stable connections, as well as by the general public. Sporting Blood is "Bud" Fishers recent costly purchase, and a nght good colt. The pedigrees of the seven starters, together with their complete records as two and three-year-olds, follow : Horse.
