VERSATILE FRENCH RACE HORSE The flat-racing season at Deauville for this year closed, when the big race of the day, the Prix de la Plage Flenrle, was easily Avon by M. A. Veil-Pickards good all-round performer Bateau. This is another of those versatile raee horses which are becoming quite a feature of French racing. By St. Just Berceuse. Bateau is a cast-off from Baron E. de Rothschilds stable, and, although only a four-year-old, has passed nearly twelve months racing under National Hunt rules. He gained considerable distinction as a hnrdler, being third to Forearm In this years Grand Hurdle race at Auteiiil. Since returning to flat-racing. Bateau has beaten some of the best-class horses oyer all distances. The same afternoon M. M. Boussacs two-year-old filly, Sibylle III., did a splendid performance by winning the Prix Maurice de Gheest fr6m several of the speediest youngsters of the season.
