The mile and a » half handicap, which was the piece de resistance of yesterdays program at the border course, provided a thrilling contest in which the gameness of those entered received the acid test. It resulted in glorious victory for C. B. Irwins Buckhorn II.. Which with jockey Long and only ninety pounds in ; the saddle, was home first after indulging in a 1 terrific stretch duel, in which Veteran and Sunny- i land participated. Buckhorn II. ran a remarkable i ia e to win. He was coupled with Walter Dant. . and it was really the last-named horse which car- -ried the hopes of Irwin. Buckhorn II. was entered I i to either set or force a fast pace, and when the ! harrier arose his rider rode him hard in an en- j deavor to get to the front. Repeatedly he belabored him with his whip, but during the early running of the long race Buckhorn II. was unable to cope with the sizzling pace set by Sunnyland. It was that fleet footed thoroughbred which took the lead as the harrier arose and before the field had traveled half mile he was at least eight lengths in front. He ran the half in AS. At the mile he was still , eight lengths in front and the official watches caught him in 1:39-,. Following in his wake was Planet. Veteran and Buekhorn II.. the latter under punishment. Hounding the far turn the terrific pa. e that Sunuylahd had set told on him and he tired and began to shorten his stride. Filtering the stretch both Btickhoni II. and Veteran gained on him and in a flash tiie whips of the three riders came into action. And what a drive it was. Came but tired these three stuck to their guns while the big crowd on hand shouted words of encouragement. Hearing the finish Buckhorn II. drew away slightly, with Veteran holding on like grim death, while Sunnyland with the heart of a lion also hung on tenaciously. Passing the finishing post the three finished as named, separated by inches only. The even money favorite Planet, which etteaaweei to keep withia striking distance of the pacemaker, fini-h.-d I -eaten off and in last place. The davs sport was ushered in with a three-"luarlers mile dash, in which Eugenia K. was most fancied. However, her showing was a had one! and she failed to gather any part of the purse. Aryanna. carrying the colors of Ihe San Diego Stable, which is controlled by local sportsmeu, made every |K st I winning one and led Beautiful Dream and Mac Johnson home first. BLACK TOP AT LONG ODDS. Black Top. the four-year -old son of Orniondale and Black Cap. which William "Hed"l Walker! recently claimed from Del Fountain, sprung the j I surprise of the day by winning at the first asking I | in his new owners silks. It was in the seventh i race, at one mile, that Black Top earned brackets. His price was a long one-01. tM to 1. to be exact — and the few who held tickets on the Walker horse were in high spirits when the returns wore learned. The finish of the race was the best of the day. Five out of the field of seven crossed the winning line heads apart, with Kat.ierine Uankiu and Fannie Nail taking second and third place. The latter was the victim of a bungling ride, and with better horsemanship would have seoied easily. Jockey ".iron explored the track with her and was all over the course during the running of the race. The colors of C. H. Irwin were much in the limelight during the afternoon. He scored a double. His first victory was reroidcd in the second race, at a mile and s-venty yards, in which his Dainty Ladj proved best over Hickorynut anil Swcnson. Buckhorn II. was the other thoroughbred to add dollars to his coffers. S. Alexandra, the quaint Knglish turfman, has gathered together a good stable of runners which he will campaign ai Maryland this spring. Those in his barn are Yorkist. Selola. Belurio, Hilly Iane and Social Star. He also owns the speed mare Jean Corey, having purchased her from A. 1.. Austin at a private sale. Just at present she is suffering from a badly wreathed ankle and it is Alexandras intention to turn .icr out at the San Diego Stock Pans, near Tijuana. Jockey T. Wilson is spending five days on the ground as a result of a suspension dealt him by the stewards for rough riding. Dr. T. J. Ogle this morning put the firing irons to Frank Fogarty in both knees and to Cavalcadotirs ankle. Both will be on the shelf for the balance of the meeting. i He Frank has been declared out of the Tijuana S Cup and Sunnyland will be sent after the rich purse by ihe Bronx Stable Jockey H-orge Swain, who formerly rode at Santa Anita, is a recent arrival here from Chicago. The loss of his five-pound apprentice allowance evidently did not lessen the demand for jockey Hnti-tamers services, as he was up on eight runnels today, one of which he was successful with.
