Baileys gelding Orpheus In 2 rOoi for the mile and j quarter. The winner carried lit pounds and Orpheus 102 pounds. Nigger Minstrel, T also owned by Sir A. Baiiey, was second favorite at 11 to 2, while Orpheus was a 23 l 1 chance. The time was a record for the E race, and the place-getters were bred in | South Africa. This, with so many English- | f bred horses racing, is something unusual in I l any important handicap in South Africa now- j r adays. The value of the Summer Handicap I was 3,000, of which ,000 went to the sec- j ■ ond and ,000 to the third. H. Nourse won the South African Derby i ■ of 0,000 with Dignitary and the South f; African Oaks of ,000 with Accuracy, by Vinieius — Precision. Dignitary is by the | Carbine horse Greatorex, which died last!1 year. The race was regarded as such a certainty for him that he was at 2 to 1 on in a field of ten, while Accuracy was also favorite for the Oaks at 6 to 4. There were eight • other runners. Dignitary won in 2:35*i for the mile and a half, and Accuracy in 2:4014- Dignitary, however, is not an exceptional three-year-old. He subsequently met Flush of Dawn in the Champion Stakes of ,C00, and though he was favorite at 5 to 4, he was ? comfortably beaten by the latter In 2:06-4 for the mile and a quarter. The latter car- ried 120 pounds to Dignitarys 102 pounds, the conditions being weight-for-age. During the course of the meeting there was a sale of bloodstock in Johannesburg, and Xourse gave 5,000 for the imported horse Syrian Prince, by The Tetrarch — Lisma. Syrian Prince was a 5,000 yearling in , England and is a half brother to the great American race horse and sire Omar Khayyam.
