SECOND DAY AT JAMAICA Disagreeable Weather Follows Summerlike Conditions Mr and Mrs Samuel D Riddle RiddleSee See Oceanic and Dream of ofthe the Valley Score a Double NEW YORK N T May 4 After the de ¬ lightful weather that graced the opening of the New York racing season yesterday there was a typical Jamaica day Thursday A cold wind blew in from the bay and rain fell al ¬ most all afternoon The track haa been dry for so long that the rainfall did not seriously affect the going but scratches were numer ¬ ous and the change in weather conditions re ¬ sulted in a decided falling off in the attend ¬ ance compared to that of the opening day dayBut But with all the uncomfortable conditions it was a most enjoyable day for Samuel D Riddle and Mrs Riddle who braved it all to see their horses of the Glen Riddle Farm per ¬ form A double victory was scored by their color bearers when the two best offerings of the day fell to Oceanic and Dream of the Valley Oceanic the stable dependence for the 50000 Preakness won the Richmond Handicap and then in the Newtown Selling Stakes that followed Dream of the Valley was an easy winner winnerThe The Newtown was the feature of the pro ¬ gram and it was a worthy race over the threequarters mile distance There were twentyfour carded but the changed weather conditions resulted in the field being pruned down to ten at post time timeNo No time was lost at the barrier and the field went away in good alignment Rice lost little time in finding his way to the lead with Dream of the Valley and hustling him along all the way there was no time that the son of Watervale was in any manner threatened At the end he was two lengths clear and racing better than anything back of him with the exception of Brainstorm which after meeting with a god deal of interference raced into fourth place placeManna Manna from the stable of Richard T Wil ¬ son after racing second practically all the vay earned that part of the purse and when H C Fishers Muskallonge was through after being third Lord Brighton raced into third place for the Rancocas Stable StableTIKST TIKST RACE TO HUGHIE HUGHIEThe The first race a fiveeighths mile dash for twoyearolds fell to William Daniels Hughie and at the end he was doing his best to withstand the determined challenge of H Roseachers Bessie Leighton a winner at Bowie BowieIt It was a good start but Bessie Leighton starting from the inside position was unable to hold that course and was outrun early being forced to race around her opponents Hughie lost little time in finding his way to the front and McAtee sent him along to such good advantage that he never surrendered the command commandBessie Bessie Leighton after going lengths further than everything else in the race was closing resolutely on Hughies lead when McAtee on the McDaniel colt bore over slightly forcing the filly to go wider still to find racing room At the end McAtee had to ride his mount out vigorously to be the winner by a neck and with better racing fortune Bessie Leighton would surely have reversed the outcome outcomeThe The Muleskinner after showing a flash of early speed saved ground in the stretch but right at tHe end when well beaten was 1 eased up to readily save third place from Jake Byers Three Square i Mrs P J Lavins Copyright was home a 1 winner of the second race principally because 1 he had the help of a wonderfully strong ride by Sande It was a mile and a sixteenth race and when it came to the last eighth the Ran i cocas Stable rider plainly put it over on Taplin who rode W Drews Jimmie in the backstretch he was pocketed behind Copyright and Jimmie Go ¬ ing to the far turn he made a threatening move but before the threeeighth post was reached he had dropped back beaten and it narrowed to a twohorse race raceJimmie Jimmie swung into the stretch close on the heels of Copyright and Sande drew his whip at the final eighth post Jimmie continued to gain and all through the last quarter Sande held little Copyright together and at the same time rode him with hand and heel to Continued ou second page I SECOND DAY AT JAMAICA JAMAICAI Continued from first page have him safely Handicap the third race of the afternoon he earned the right to start in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Slay 13 and it was decided to send him to Baltimore for that race raceSix Six went to the post in the Richmond and it was agreed that Louis Feustel had picked rather a hard spot in which to try out his colt but Oceanic made good in a manner to suggest that he belongs strictly among the good threeyearolds of the year yearKnobbie Knobbie from the Rancocas Stable was the one to set the pace while Oceanic left the barrier for all the world like a green two yearold He began badly and appeared to be beaten before he could find his racing legs But when he did settle into his stride he rapidly forced his way into second place placeWhen When the top of the stretch was reached Oceanic had come alongside Knobbie and he had Sande riding vigorously on the Ran ¬ cocas sprinter when the eighth post was reached Gaining witi every stride Oceanic went on by and at the end he was a couple of lengths clear and going fast After the finish Taplin worked him out ja full seven eighths and he apparently had much in re ¬ serve when pulled up suggesting that he is of real Preakness timber timberGeorgie
