CARD OF CLAIMING RACES Hamilton Program Devoid of Special Feature — Diademas First Start of Year Successful. HAMILTON. Ont. June 29— It was an off-day at Hamilton this afternoon, the card heing given over to claiming races. Nevertheless the racing was spirited and enjoyable, with the majority of the winners under pressure at the end to earn brackets. The track dried out considerably under the influence of a midsummer sun, but was on the slow side. The change in conditions had but little effect on the calculations of the public, for most of the winners were accorded hearty support, although several of the choices fell by the wayside. The attendance was large for an off-day and showed an improvement over that of yesterday. The best race of the afternoon was the Burlington Purse, at five and a half furlongs, in which .F. K. I,. Ross Diadema. making her first start this year, outlasted Actress and Ablaze in a drive. The start found Diadema away sluggishly, but Claver found an opening and rushed her into the lead. She set a fast pace for the others to follow and was closely pursued by Actress and Wraith Entering the stretch Diadema came wide, while Actress and "Wraith wem to the inside, with Ablaze on the outside of Diadema. In a whipping finish through the final eighth Diadema drew away from her opponents and held Actress safe at the end. The latter had but a short margin over Ablaze. Phantom Fair and jockey McTaggart proved a winning combination in the race at three-quarters, run as the fourth. At the end they had a safe margin over Anticipate and Nenette. This race completed a double for McTaggart, he having previously won with Miss Taft in the opening dash. The entry of Oakling has been refused ! by the stewards for unruly actions in the i paddock. It was impossible to saddle him: and he was ordered withdrawn from the , maiden jockeys race. That race was annexed by Blarney Boy. which was ridden by R. Doyle, defeating Sweet Bouquet and Flea. BON1FACK IN FINK FETTLK. Between races trainer McDaniel worked J. K. L. Ross Boniface a mile in 1 :45 in preparation for his National Handicap engagement, to be run on Saturday. Affectation was also sent a mile for her : engagement in the Canadian Derby at Fort | Erie. The latter worked in the same time i I as Boniface. : The following jockeys have been retained to ride in the Canadian Derby at Fort Brie: McTaggatt on Captain Scott, Williams on Chloris, Tnm«r and Calver on the Boss starters. Krickson and Wallace on tne Brook-dale starters. .1. B. Campbell will accept entries on Saturday at Hamilton for the Fourth of July Handicap, to be run at Fort .Krie. R. Pending** steeplechaser Shoal will be shipped to Maryland and rested up. The horse went wrong. A regular meeting of the Canadian Racing Associations will be held in the clubhouse at Hamilton tomorrow. Regular business and routine matters will be brought up. Jockeys D. Stirling and T. Wilson leave for Devonshire this evening to rejoin their respective employers. Trainer B. Holmes reported this morning that the plater Old Dad had fallen lame and would be turned out for the summer. Trainer W. Wilson announced that a division of the public stable he has in charge would be shipped to Windsor, while the remainder wouhl be left at Hamilton. Trainer Burtschell reported that Bromelia had gone wrong and would be on the sheif for some time. J. W. Beans Arrah Co On will be shipped to Silver Springs. Md., and rested up until the fall racing season. »
