LATONIA GOING lMPROVtS » Rapidly Drying Out Track Leads to Better Racing. ♦ Parader Defeats Radio in Exciting j Finish — Cherry Tree Disappoints — Derby Trials. • P,Y J. L. DEMPSEY. I.ATONIA. Ky.. June 29.— T. J. Pender-gasts Parader continues showing consistent form and ran right back to his good race of last Monday when he finished bang-op second to Minto II. in one of the fastest races run in years, when he won this afternoon in the mile feature dash after a hard struggle, first to outstay Gangway and, later, to withstand the challenge offered by Radio. He won by a scant neck in the good time of 1.:!! over a dull track. There were five contenders for the purs • of ,700 and their evenly-matched form under their weight assignment caused Steady backing for all. with Parader finally a slight favorite. He was kept in restraint during the running of the first half, while Bit « f White and Gangway were making or forcing the pace, but he took command when called and came into the stretch with a good lead. But Gangway also had something in reserve and forced him to do his best for an eigl 1 of a mile in the stretch. Then Radio, coming with a great rush, forced him to be ridden out to get by the finish a scant neck to the good. Bit of White set a fast early pace and was galloped out an additional quarter of a mile in preparation for her start in the Inde-pendenee Handicap next Tuesday. Todays track still showed traces of its reeent drenching, but it was dry on the surface and fairly good time was the rule in those dashes where the better grade racers competed. Favorites again received a setback, the ■najorty failing badly. I.ANTAOOS FOUND WANTING. The Harry Payne Whitney owned Cherry Tree was one of the choices that contributed extensive woe to the backers. He was in with other fast ones in the three-quarters dash, and it was expected of him that he WOUld have little difficulty in leading at tlie ! finish, but the best he could do was to land la third plar.-, hard ridden and all out. Kasteside was an easy victor, with Tuscola in second place. Tuscola showed herself to be a sprinter of high speed, for she disposed of the non-slaing Lantados in the first quarter and, finishing gamely, forced Haste-side to be ridden hard at one time to race into the lead. The race effectively disposed of any claims for I aaladoa. He has been tried highly since his advent here and found decidedly wanting. Maybe when he returns to his old bailiwick, Tijuana, he will again become prominent. After proving a disappointment in his hist three racer, on which occasions he wac at odds-on each time, High Cost today surprised by winning in a fairly good field. He just managed to beat Bullion home by a scant half length, with Guvnor in third place. T. P. Hayes had designs with his maiden two-year-old filly Bendita in the second race and she probably would have won but for the interference she suffered from repeatedly, beginning at the start Jockey Kederis, making his first saddle appearance after a long absence, was held to blame for the interference and received a suspension from the stewards that will keep him idle for the remainder of the meeting. Boldgold, Piedmont and Miss Jane were lucky to escape the frequent crowding that came in the race and finished in the above order. TBX AND BOJUL IN DUEL. A spirited duel was furnished in the third race by the pair of outsiders Tex and Bojul and they terminated the race noses apart, with Tex the winner. It marked the first victory for G. L. Blackford since the close of Lexington. The sixth race found Harry Payne Whitneys Punta Gorda finally winning a purse, but it required herculean riding on the part of Penman to bring her home first. Jakie Hay finished in second place and Jack Bauer third. The latter treatened at one time to make a runaway of it, but tired perceptibly in the last eighth and would have been beaten in a few strides more for third place. The infirm Pictor was backed with rare confidence in the closing dash and he won decisively from Escarpolette and Repeater, but he returned to the scales badly lame. It is characteristic of him and his lameness after a work or race is chronic. He cools Con tinned «a second pace. i | j ! I : I I : I I I [ • • - - 3 . LATONIA GOING IMPROVES ! Continued from first page. ■ ■ : out of it. The soft going of today made him show almost stake form. Pictor was claimed out of the last race by T. F. Devereaux for ,96*. Willis Bharpe Kilmers great horse Exter-minator arrived at Latonia this moining for the purpose of filling his engagement in Dip Independence Handicap, al one mile and a half, to be run next Tuesday. Trainer Eu-gene Wayland will arrive Saturday. Mr. Kilmers rider. Albert Johnson, will be here Monday to ride the gelding in the race. Exterminator appeared to be in perfect condition when uidoaded and taken to his stall, which is in the same barn that housed Mor- ! j rich and Pillory when they were here. Bob Shannon is reluctantly compelled to retire his good three-year-oid cott Deadlock until the fall racing, owing to the eoH ha lag a badly bruised heel. The Injured mem-, ber was operated on this morning and it Is believed the Colt after a let-up of a couple I | of months, will be in good condition to race at the Latonia fall m eting. Harry Payne Whitneys pair of Latonfa Derby candidates, Olympus aiid Broossster, were gien their last trial prior to Saturdays Derby, when they were both sent the tt [Derby distance of a mile and a half over a somewhat slow track this morning. The colts were worked separately and Pen-■ man was up on both. Olympus covered the distance in -:407i and Broomstets time was 2ASy;,. Nothing sensational was attempted i and trainer James Kowe. Jr.. was well satis- | | lied with what was aeeomplished by the cotta Thibodaux. which will carry the main | hopes of the westerners in the latonia Derby, was given a splendid workout after1 the races Wednesday when he was sent the Derby distance in 2:352i, which was regarded as a most praiseworthy effort in view of the fact that the track was not at its best. He worked in the following fractions: 24, 41%. 1:15%, P42-V 2:0S, 2:35%. The colt was pulled up in good condition and was none the worse for his gallop. Mose CoSBBSSn, agent for E. R. Bradleys I Stable, is making rapid progress toward recovery from an operation that has kept him in a local hospital almost from the beginning of the present meeting. He will be ready to leave the hospital within a few days. Jockey G. Fields will be out of the saddle for several months, as a result of a fall in i the second race on Golden Charter, when . that colt stumbled and the bridle came off. He sustained a compound fracture of the left leg below the knee and minor bruises about the body. He was to have accompanied the * J. B. Respess consignment to Devonshire ! tonight, but because of his injury will be ; inactive for some time and Respess will have . to get another rider. Cain and Sanford and W. G. Miller were others that shipped tonight for the Devonshire racing that begins July L 1
