LONDON, England. November 27. With a considerable section of the racing community the name of Donoghue is almost talismanic, and the shout of "Come on, Steve I" so often heard in the course of a race is reminiscent the "Come on, Fred !" addressed to Archer when that famous horseman was the idol of the public a generation ago. For nine consecutive years Donoghue has headed the list of winning jockeys at the close of the season, and there now seems to be a reasonable probability that he will equal the record of Archer, who stood first for thirteen years without a break. Donoghue has lost none of his ability in the saddle, and his bodily weight keeps at poundage that admits of his accepting more mounts than almost any of his rivals. In addition to being in a position to command handsome retaining fees, he can pick and choose his mounts with considerable freedom. This year he comes out first by a somewhat narrow margin, and at one time there seemed just the chance that he would lose his position to Elliott, who was within five of his score. It has been usual for him to take the lead from the start and to hold it to the end. He did so in the season just closed, and once could boast only a few short of double the number of wins down to his nearest rival. His advantage then suffered some shortage through his absence in France, thus affording opportunities for others, and of late both he and Elliott have been rather slow in adding to their brackets. Donoghue has taken a fair share of honors in the classic races, and steered another Derby winner in Captain Cuttle, a combination of horse and jockey much to the taste and profit of not a few backers. He accounted for many other important races, and it was an encouraging send-off when he steered Granely to victory in the Lincolnshire Handicap. He will commence 1923 with retainers from Lord Woolavington and Mr. James White and may conceivably have the pleasure of victoriously riding Captain Cuttle in the Ascot Gold Cup and other coveted races if only the son of Hurry On stands the necessary training. Donoghue thus restarts under the brightest auspices, holding, as he does, such an enviable position. There is, too, the possibility, if not the probability, of his riding yet another Derby winner in Town Guard, and no man could be better trusted to steer a horse over Epsom Downs than he. His winning record for the past nine years follows : Year. Mts. "Wins. Year. Mts.
