W. S. KILMERS 1923 STABLE Sun Briar Courts Band of Horses Await Racing of New Year. 0 All but One of the Coming Two-Year-Olds Are Home llrcds Exterminator Expected to Continue Winning Ways Next Year. o Willis Sharpe Kilmer came into instant prominence on the American turf when he imported Sun Briar some years back and since that auspicious entry to thoroughbred racing his silks have ever played an important part in the sport. Exterminator, the old son of McGee and Fair Empress, one of the most popular horse3 ever known to American racing, has had much to do with the success of the silks, while many another good one has from time to time kept the stable in the forefront. For the year of 1922 Sallys Alley, winner of both the old Coney Island Jockey Club Futurity and the Pimlico Futurity, gave the Binghamton sportsman an altogether new thrill, and Exterminator himself had his best money-earning year in his long faithful service. The Kilmer silks are still being shown at New Orleans, but the real string is at Sun Briar Court at Binghamton in the care of Eugene Wayland, who so successfully campaigned the stable through the year. No winter quarters are more modern than those at Sun Briar Court and when Wayland brings the horses from the farm next spring they will be ready for the races. It was there that they were fitted last winter and. Exterminator, never rated a sprinter, was winner of the Harford Handicap, at three-quarters of a mile, the opening day at Havre de Grace. It is possible that the old son of McGee will again go after the same prize next year. Old Slim is less than ,000 behind the total of the mighty Man o War in his winnings, and Wayland promises that he will pass the Riddle champion before the 1923 racing season is well begun. It was Waylands hope to top the Man o War total last year, but just when it seemed inevitable the old fellow went off slightly and he did not reach his goal. HOUSES GOING ALONG WELL. Wayland lias reported that all of the horses are going along exceedingly well even at this time, and he has no doubt he will have them well ready for a Maryland campaign. I Wayland enjoys the distinction of only having saddled two horses for the Futurity and each was a winner. His first triumph was when he sent Step Lightly to the post for Walter J. Salmon in 1920 and his other score was this year with Sallys Alley. Incidentally it was a doubly remarkable record when it is remembered that each winner is a filly. The Kilmer racing string for 1923 promises to be bigger and better than ever before. William Shields has seven at New Orleans and Wayland has twenty at Sun Briar Court. Of the Wayland horses the older ones are Exterminater and the coming three-year-olds Sallys Alley, Sun Quest, Sun Thistle, Sun Doll and Sunference. The others are all coming two-year-olds, and with the exception of Craigthorne, a bay daughter of George Continued on twelfth page. 1 J 1 1 j y J j 3 j j j 9 9 e " r -r W. S. Craigthorne was purchased by Mr. Kilmer for her ultimate worth as a matron and on account of the Rock Sand blood she has through her dam.
