ROYALTY HONORED ECLIPSJ ECLIPSJWilliam William IV of England Presented PresentedGold Gold Mounted Hoof of Great GreatRace Race Horse to Horsemen Showing the high esteem in which royalty held the thoroughbred nearly a century ago the following account of a banquet given by William IV in honor of the turf and recorded in the American Turf Register of 1832 is reprinted here hereAt At this great festival wntch is given every year by the English monarch in honor of the turf about seventy noblemen and gentle ¬ men of the highest rank and fortune con ¬ spicuous patrons of the thoroughbred horse and the sports of the turf sat down to a splendid repast served in the royal ban ¬ quet room roomThe The reader will be struck with the follow ¬ ing incident as displaying a high degree of enthusiasm What posthumous honors shall be paid to Sir Archy We have bespoken one of his hoofs to be exhibited with ven ¬ eration in the office of the Sporting ilaza zine zineAfter After dinner the hoof of the celebrated racer Eclipse elegantly mounted in the mid die of a gold salver was produced and was presented by the king to the club The top of the hoof had a covering of gold on whi2h was engraved the figure of Ellipse In front of the hoof were the royal arms raised in gold The hoof was supported by a pedestal of gold one of the sides of which bore the following inscription This piece of plitc with the hoof of Eclipse was presented by his Most Gracious Majesty William IV to the Jockey Club May 183 The salver it ¬ self was chastly and elegantly ornamented The handles were formed by wreaths of laureL
