COMMANDER J K L ROSS Discusses Bacing With Robert RobertLeighton Leighton Before Sailing From FromVancouver Vancouver for the Orient SAN FRANCISCO Cal January 6 Rob ¬ ert F Leighton racing manager of the Pa ¬ cific Coast Jockey Club writes from Van ¬ couver where he spent the holidays that he had the pleasure of a long racing chat with Commander J K L Ross prior to the sailing of the noted breeder and owner to the Orient on the Canadian steamship Em ¬ press of Russia Mrs Ross sister makes her home in Manila and the commander and his wife plan to visit the capital of the Philip ¬ pines Probably they will devote same time to the principal cities of Japan on the return leg of the journey journeyCommander Commander Ross is much interested in the revival of racing hereabouts and fired quite a volley of queries at Mr Leighton about the sport to begin at Tanforan in the late spring He expressed great satisfaction at the pros ¬ pect of racing at the peninsula track on the highest plane planeWhen When Francis Nelson presiding steward of the Canadian courses and also an official at Tijuana passed through here on the way to the border track he told vicepresident Rudolph Spreckels of the Pacific Coast Joc ¬ key Club of the upbuilding of the Woodbine course For the first two or three years the two sevenday meetings a year at the Canadian track left a balance on the wrong side of the ledger The sport lovers in the organization did hot despair however and now Woodbine is one of the most successful courses anywhere and is not losing money either eitherWe We dont expect to get on our feet finan ¬ cially right off the reel is the way the vice president of the new jockey club and the other directors put it when doubting Thom ¬ ases express themselves about tha perman ¬ ency of the new track here hereA A similar message has been sent from the North by Commander Rcss through Mr Leighton He is of the opinion that the sport is bound to be a success if the originators are only patient enough to let it grow up step by step
