NEW ORLEANS RACING Big Crowd at Fair Grounds De ¬ spite Threatening Skies Blarney Stone Defeats Calcutta in inDays Days Main Race Marvin May MayTakes Takes Powers Memorial NEW ORLEANS La January G Threat ¬ ening weather preceded by a brisk shower had an influencing effect in keeping the at ¬ tendance down at the Fair Grounds this aft ¬ ernoon but it almost reached numbers of a holiday gathering The track was not af ¬ fected to any appreciable extent by the rain and spirited racing resulted with fairly good time recorded in the principal dashes dashesA A handicap at a mile and seventy yards for a purse of 51200 was the principal race and it brought to the post some of the best horses here and resulted in an upset when Blarney Stone a frequent offender won commandingly from Calcutta winner of the New Years Handicap with Colando in third place and such good ones as Comic Song and Wapiti farther back Wapiti was practically left at the post He displayed a brilliant performance from where he got off and with an equal sendoff probably would have won Martin again had the mount on Blarney Stone and rode him faultlessly except that he took an outside course forcing the horse to go a bit farther but he raced by the lead ¬ ers in the last sixteenth to win easing up Calcutta showed that his New Years Han ¬ dicap victory was not of the fluky variety for he ran well and finished gamely today and outstayed Colando in the final drive driveComic Comic Song was prominent for most of the race but his heavy impost began telling in the stretch and he tired fast fastBetting Betting action in the pavilion was heavier than even on New Years day and the layers again reaped a harvest for winners were elusive in most instances instancesJOHNNY JOHNNY POWERS MEMOKIAl MEMOKIAlThe The Johnny Powors Memorial Handicap which has been an annual feature here since the death of tho late John Powers and to which his numerous friends subscribed a handsome piece of plate to go to the owner winning the race twice divided attention with the mile and seventy yards handicap Marvin May which won the Memorial last year was again the winner this year and in ¬ cidentally he showed suddenly improved form over his last previous race when he was beaten off Marvin May though a twice winner in succession fails to get the plate for the conditions call for an owner winning the race twice Last year Marvin May raced in the colors of Mays Lake Farm Stable owned by the late F S Peabody Some good sprinters started in the race with My Rev ¬ erie a double winner at this meeting the favored one but a sorry disappointment to ¬ day for she failed to get a part of the purse Marvin May led throughout whereas My Reverie was always outrun second and third places going to Parader and LEffare re ¬ spectively Parader was backed with rare confidence and his sudden improvement caused the stewards to question jockey Owens who also had the mount on him in a preceding race The rider acknowledged that he did not persevere with him after the horse seemed to flounder flounderTWO TWO FOll JOCKEY LYKE LYKEJockey Jockey Lyke who apparently has taken the stewards warning to heart again dem ¬ onstrated his outstanding horsemanship over the other riders here by scoring a pair of brackets in skillful fashion He opened pro ¬ ceedings by landing Green Gold the victor in the opener in runaway style Oraleggo and Leo Fisher wera accorded much sup ¬ port in the race but ran badly and were far back for the entire race Marvin May was assisted materially by the good ride that Lyke gave him himMiss Miss Meise was the winner of the second race after a spirited drive with Contour and Untried Lady Myra and Allie Ochs divided betting attention with the winner but Allie Ochs tired and Lady Myra never figured prominently prominentlyCrack Crack o Dawn carrying T E Grists colors and jockey Scobie accounted for the fifth in which he was forced to stand a hard drive to get home in advance of Ilamkin and American Boy Fantoche was backed extensively but he was handicapped by a bad ride and a slow start startJ J McPherson made it a double for the afternoon when his Rib Grass won in run ¬ away style in the mile and a quarter dash His success gave Pool a double also for the afternoon for that rider had piloted Miss Meise to her victory It also helped him to repay the 23 fine Imposed by the stew ¬ ards for using insulting language to assist ¬ ant general manager James Lemarie The rider was also made to apologize to Mr Lemarie LemarieThe The concluding race fell In easy style to Sagamook which delayed his rush until reaching the stretch turn from where he raced into the lead to win from Huonec with ease with Pit just managing to outstay Tulsa the early pacemaker pacemakerColonel Colonel Livingston a crack as a twoyear old but in retirement since falling badly lame made his reentry in racing today but finished in a bad way He may continue racing racingBarry Barry Shannon superintendent of Idle Hour Farm writing here stated that all the Bradley horses at the farm are doing well He also stated that trainer Thompson strick ¬ en with a paralytic stroke at Baltimore was progressing steadily and would return to Idle Hour Farm about January 15 to resume training tho Bradley main string
