Leading American Breeders As a breeder of successful thoroughbred race horses John E Madden stands preeminent in this country During the last six years horses bred at his famous Hamburg Place in Kentucky have won 1951 races over the various tracks of this country Canada Cuba and Mexico It is a wonderful record unapproached by any other breeder Success has not come to Mr Madden in a haphazard way nothing was left to chance or luck A keen knowledge of the best blood lines and then proper blending is in great measure the keynote of his success successHarry Harry Payne Whitney is another American breeder who has met with unqualified success From 1917 to 1922 horses bred at his noted establishments in Kentucky and New Jersey have won 1077 races Unlike Mr Madden who sells the greater part of the output of Hamburg Place yearly Mr Whitney races under his own colors the majority of the horses bred by him only discarding those that fail to come up to the high standard expected of the Whitney racers racersAugust August Belmont chairman of the Jockey Club has a total of 837 races won during the last six years by horses bred at his noted Nursery Stud in Kentucky One of the greatest horses of the century Man o War was bred at the Nursery Stud and but for the fortunes of war which led Mr Belmont to dispose of his yearlings in 1919 and 1920 something he was not wont to do prior to that time he would have had not only the pleasure and pride of breeding but also of racing that celebrated horse horseThe The late H T Oxnard A B Spreckels A B Hancock R T Wilson C W Moore E R Bradley and John Sanford are among other breeders who have seen year after year horses bred at ther farms win a goodly share of the turf prizes The climax of E R Bradleys career as a breeder came in 1921 when two horses he bred at his Idle Hoffr Farm Behave Tourself and Black Servant finished first and second in the Kentucky Derby DerbyIn In the list of our leading breeders of the last six years appears the name of the late James B Haggin at one time the owner of the largest breeding establishment in the world which is now fast disappearing and will soon be but a memory of past greatness greatnessHow How heavy were the importations of foreignbred horses to this country during and after the war may be readily perceived when it is pointed out that horses bred in England won 159G races in this country during the last six years while horses bred In France won 931 races during the same period Many of these horses are now in the stud and when mated with the solid old American lines are bound to further enhance the value of the American thoroughbred thoroughbredThe The records of the leading American breeders for the last six years are here presented the totals shown representing the races won by horses bred by them themBreeder Breeder 1917 1918 1919 1920 1921 1922 Total TotalJohn John E J dden 334 213 311 313 424 360 1901 1901Harry Harry Payne Whitney 175 120 152 220 179 231 107
