Here and There on the Turf Endurance of American Horses HorsesMoney Money Winners of Different DifferentAges Ages Horses That Raced Many ManyTimes Times Frequently it has been argued that the American race horse does not endure This is accounted for by some in the excessive racing of twoyearolds There really is no good excuse for this early racing of the imma ¬ ture thoroughbreds and it is possible that the amount of money hung up for the twoyear olds is altogether too high hi comparison with the apportionment to threeyearolds and the older horses but the American thoroughbred is no weakling He will endure just as long as any other thoroughbred and while a change of allotment in the offering of money might bring about even a sturdier average of horses the American horse races to a ripe old age as can be shown by the statistics of 1922 1922Of Of course any etory of the old horses must begin with Exterminator now an eightyear old He ran in sixteen races last year of which he won ten for a total in money of 71075 Then Mad Hatter now seven years years old was started twentyone times and he was winner of 44250 hi money Boni ¬ face which has given Exterminator some of his hardest battles is now an eightyearold and last year raced eleven times and took 23888 Sennings Park which came to an untimely end last year when he was a sixyearold started ten times and was winner of 17775 Hidden Jewel a celling plater sprinter as a sixyear old last year raced forty tunes and earned 13245 Soumangha the marc that won the Brook Cup Steeplechase for the Greentree Stable was a sevenyearold last year and has done duty as a matron She was started nine times in 1922 and her earnings were 13045 13045Sea Sea Tale another steeplechase mare that was raced eight times was winner of 11680 was a sixyearold last year Pastoral Swain Tufter Yorkist Be Frank Gourmand and Minata were others of the same age that raced repeatedly to win in excess of 10000 in 1922 In fact there were thirty horses six years old and over that won amounts ranging from 7094 to the Exterminator total of 71075 71075Then Then going to the fiveyearold division there were thirty horses that earned from 7150 to 33250 In this division Captain Alcock from the Quincy Stable has the post of honor and his principal winnings were hi the Bowie Pimlico Cup and Suburban Handicaps Dr Clark was not so far behind him when he won 27556 and in all there were twelve of the fiveyearolds that won in excess of 10000 during the racing season seasonThe The fouryearold statistics reveal that the thirty leaders won amounts ranging from 7796 to 39110 Firebrand was easily at the top and Grey Lag was second on the list with 26937 as his total Others to win in ex ¬ cess of 20000 were Tryster Devastation Bunga Buck and Lady Madcap Seven others followed with winnings of more than 15000 and less than 20000 They were Golden Sphere Billy Barton Registrar United Verde Prince James Mulciber and Exodus Nine of thirty won in excess of 10000 and less than 15000 and these were Knobbie Thimble Eleanor S Radio Bon Homme Planet Care ¬ ful Baby Grand and Muskallonge Thus it will be seen that of the thirty leading four yearolds of 1922 there were twentythree of them that won in excess of 10000 This is further evidence of how the horses endure endureAnd And the old horses stand up That has been shown year after year with Exterminator Bor ¬ row Stromboli Reamer and many another that has come out year after year yearStill Still another table of the busy race horses of 1922 has been compiled telling of horses that were raced more frequently than all the others This tells of the horses that raced fortyfive tunes or more In this list it is shown that Miss Kruter eleven years old last year was raced fiftyone times Flantagenet a ten yearold was raced fiftysix tunes and Woodie Montgomery a nineyearold was sent to the post in fiftytwo races racesGoing Going on down the line there were three eightyearolds in Kitty Cheatham Rafferty and Velvet Eight of those in the list were sevenyearolds seven of them sixyearolds eight of them fiveyearolds eight of them four yearolds and one of them a threeyearold threeyearoldAnother Another lesson that is taught by the statistics is that of horses raced so busily twentytwo were geldings three were entire horses and thirteen were mares It has been demonstrated long since that the gelding is the best wearing in racing and this table bears that out Others that appeared in the list are Midian American Eagle and the fouryearold colt Chow The one threeyearcld that was raced to a place in the table of busy horses was Kimono a daughter of Horron and Negligee She was started fiftythree times during the year yearAnother Another remarkable thing shown in this list of thoroughbreds is that no particular sire stands out over the others in begetting the enduring horse There are thirtyeight in the list that were raced fortyfive tunes or more and there are thirtysix different sires repre ¬ sented in the list listHarrigan Harrigan and Transvaal are represented by two each and other sires shown are Jack At ¬ kin Meeiick Meridian Rock View Ballot j Ogden Uncle Martinet Horron First Chip Duval Ethelbert St Swithens Go to Bed First Sight King James Bowman Suffragist i Prospero Superman Pclymelian Peep oDay Onnondale Fireman Dr Leggo Lovetie Broomstick Garry Herrmann Theo Cook i Rapid Water The Manager Hurst Park anJ i Assagai AssagaiThus Thus it will be seen that the thoroughbred docs endure and t is not peculiar to any particular family
