BIG DAY FOR C B IRWIN His Colors Carried in Triumph in Three of Wednesdays Races Bowsprit Qualifies as Good Hm Running Tijuana Derby Candidate Eleventh Vic ¬ tory for Consistent Harry 1 SAX DIEGO Cal January 23 The Ti ¬ juana Derby is not to be run tomorrow the next day or the day after that but when the time rolls around for its d2cision which will be March IS race followers in these parts will be given an intimate knowledge of candidates and also what they may expect of them under various track conditions It came about yesterday that the fifth race a handicap at one mile had as starters sev ¬ eral of the Derby candidates and further ¬ more the fans had their first opportunity to see these young horses perform in the mud mudTo To the regret of a big crowd the Harry Payne Whitney colt Spot Cash whose races have been spectacular went to the post with a slightly lame foot and this undoubtedly cost him the race in the opinion of many Spot Cash was installed a heavy favorite being 1 to 2 in the books at post time After racing in close attendance on Van Patrick which established the pace Bowsprit from the stable of C B Irwin wore Van Patrick down at the threeeighths post and when they turned for home he held a threelength lead which he increased to four lengths when the end was reached Van Patrick retired au eighth out to be last Delante which was close up all the way was a good second three lengths ahead of Spot Cash and the latter despite his handicap ran a game race in the stretch but was unsteady on his legs It was a great day for C B Irwin for after saddling the winner of the fourth race in Corncutter and furnished Bowsprit as the victory of the mile handicap he came right back in the sixtli and scored a victory with his grand horse Harry D which annexed his eleventh win in fifteen starts at this meeting Harry Ds string of victories pro ¬ claim him the iron horse of the year and yesterday afternoon when in victory he was cheered lustily It was not accomplished without a game effort for Incognance raced with him as a team for practically all of the way and it was only the bulldog tenacity of the winner in a terrific stretch battle that enabled transformed overnight The rain of Tuesday evening had converted the track into a sea of mud and in consequence withdrawals were many only horses with a fondness for the wet going being seen under post and had he a few more yards to go Tubby A would have downed him As it happened it took the most careful kind of nursing on the part of jockey Slaughter to keep Kinglike going long enough to catch
