Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of January 26 1903 Racing at New Orleans Oakland and New ¬ port W II Laudeman has turned his good horse Hernando over to P Dunne for training this Ed Corrigaus good old mare Modesty win j ncr of the first American Derby slipped a foa by Artillery recently Having satisfactorily explained his ride on Alfred C to the stewards at New Orleans jockey Winkfield was restored to good standing today Thoroughbreds that cost 25000 were sacri ¬ ficed by auction at San Francisco for a mere song They belonged to P G Lane son of the millionaire mining man who started a breeding farm in Nevada He grew tired of the venture and shipped the entire band to San Francisco where they arrived in poor con ¬ dition They brought only 1300 Cimeter daughter of the mare Sabrina that gave Water Color to the American turf was secured by Charley Kerr for 45 Grinstead gave to the turf such good performers as Volante Santa Ana Santiago and Silver Cloud yet Sabnica a Grinstead mare went to Barnsy Schreiber for 90 The auctioneer could only obtain 50 for a mare by Islington sire of Kinlcy Mack The young mare Midlothia by Midlothian from a King Alphonso mare brought only 115 while Playfere by Midlo ¬ thian went for 175 These were fancy prices Several marcs in foal to Bright Phoebus winner of the Realization were knocked down for 10 C E Durnell who was suspended in France two years ago has received the agreeable in ¬ formation that his suspension had been lifted by the French Jockey Club A Coulois editor of tb3 Paris newspaper Le Sport who is visiting this country brought over papers with him from the French turf authorities in ¬ cluding an application for a trainers license in France These will be signed by Durnell and forwarded to the French Jockey Club In due course Durnell according to the state ¬ ment of Mr Coulois will receive notification of his reinstatement This will remove the bar against him both at San Francisco and in the East It will also mean that McChesney and the other good racers of the Durnell Herz string will be raced in the East at least a portion of the coming racing season Speak ¬ ing of the matter Durnell says he is greatly pleased with the turn of affairs with regard to his relations to the French Jockey Club I felt at the time that I was unjustly suspended said Durnell The day the stewards suspended me I rode the first four winners and that I got left in the other race was not my fault If reinstated by the French authorities I do not suppose there will be any valid objection to our racing in the East and we will very likely ship our string there though how soon I cannot state We have made entries in the western states and may race in the West dur ¬ ing the early part of the season
