CHAMPION OF CUBA Perhaps Earns That Distinction in Scoring Seventh Victory Easily Triumphs Over Different DifferentEyes Eyes in Fast Run Race Erica Redeems Himself HAVANA Cuba February 4 Selling plat ¬ er though he is the Luke JIcLuke gelding Perhaps is a champion at least here in Cuba Distance a slow or fast track has made little difference He has won at one mile and fifty yards at a mile and today in scoring his seventh triumph of the meeting he astonished the big crowd with a dazzling display of speed running threequarters in 111 equaling the fastest time of the win ¬ ter at Oriental Park Perhaps was an odds on favorite but there were many who fig ¬ ured that the speedy Different Eyes would take his measure at the distance with the result that the former Stoueham racer did not lack admirers admirersThere There was no denying that Different Eyes was primed for this contest He set a tre ¬ mendous early pace appearing to fly over the ground going the first quarter in 22 and the half in 4G However on the far turn he ran out and went exceedingly wdo en ¬ tering the stretch practically ruining what ¬ ever chances he may have had hadIn In the meantime T Brothers rode a wait ¬ ing race on Perhaps keeping the gelding close up to the leader and reserving his speed for the final test When Different Eyes ran out Brothers lost no time in taking advan ¬ tage of the opportunity and sent Perhaps to the front With gigantic strides the son of Luke McLuke raced along to victory fin ¬ ishing three and a half lengths ahead of Different Eyes The other three starters were far back of the leading pair pairPEUIIAPS PEUIIAPS CONSISTENT RECORD RECORDIn In ten starts here this winter Perhaps has won seven times finished second once and was unplaced twice and is easily the most improved horse at this course courseTom Tom Norrii at the substantial odds of 12 to 1 in the books and 3260 for 2 in the mutucls furnished a surprise irt the third race by scoring after a highly thrilling per ¬ formance coming from last place and closing a big gap to get up in the last strides He beat Haran by a neck with Frascuelo Humpy and Machine Gunner having a battle royal for the short end of the purse the first mentioned being awarded JL JLThe The Vulcain colt Erica came back today and regained some of his lost prestige by a slashing though easily achieved victory in j the fifth race He won in fast time after leading all the way never seriously menaced j jS S McNeils Whispering was the preference in a betting way in the initial dash of the i afternoon but after racing prominently for the greater part of the contest tired and was led home by Dicknell Miss Hope and Jose ¬ phine K in the order named The last named loomed up as the probable winner entering the srctch where she took the lead only to tire in the last sixteenth The victory of Dicknell was of a sensational order the son of Dick Finnell coming from the rear in the stretch and overtaking the leaders in the last tweny yards drew clear right at the end ED GARRISON FAILS FAILSThe The New York statebred Blackstone a product of the East View Stud of James But ¬ ler owner of the Empire City track easily captured the second race in which the vet ¬ eran Ed Garrison found most favor in the eyes of the speculators Blaekstone began slowly but gained rapidly and taking the lead after entering the homestretch had a three lengths winning margin over Ed Gar ¬ rison at the finish The latter ran well racing Good Enough into defeat in the last eighth but was not able to catch the ul ¬ timate winner
