Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of February 5 1903 Racing at New Orleans Newport and Oak ¬ land Jockeys Mountain Johnson at Newport and Jenkins and Daly at Oakland scored double wins during the afternoon afternoonSeven Seven brood mares belonging to W J Ar kell New York have been sent to Melrose Stud Lexington to be bred to St Maxim in The first colts the get of Perry Belmonts noted horse Ethelbert winner of about 575000 on the turf were foaled several days ago at the Arbordale Stud of J C Graves Lexington Ky where Mr Belmont has his horses The young mare lona S by Magnetizer lona foaled a chestnut filly while Frantic a daugh ¬ ter of Hindoo Francesco dropped a bay colt coltBoxwood Boxwood in the stable of G B Morris is well thought of by turfmen A horseman who was looking Boxwood over the other day be ¬ came very enthusiastic about b bm m and said Boxwood is well developed and as handsome as a picture He has shown that he likss a long route and when started in such a race will be very hard to beat He is bred in the purple being by Watercress Calve There are nothing but good sires race horses race mares and producers in the first five gener ¬ ations of Boxwoods pedigree He is bred to be just what he is a race horse all over He is much more talcing to the eye than that other black fellow Krishna which created a sensation when he won the California Jockey Club Futurity Stakes and if I am any judge Boxwood will prove far and away the best race horse After a careful study of the weights for the Brooklyn and Suburban Handicaps local turf ¬ men expressed satisfaction with them just as they did with the Brighton imposts It was the opinion that handicapper Vosburghs work could not have been improved on and that all three handicaps will provide problems difficult to solve A few who were inclined to criticize the weights seemed to think that Mr iVosburgh had treated the western entries par ¬ ticularly M T Tichenors fast filly Flocarline with littla consideration but in view of the formidable prestige of the topweight division no serious fault could be found Owners and trainers alike concurred in the opinion that Mr Vosburgh allotted the top imposts to Her mis Advance Guard Blues Major Dainger field Colonel Bill Sombrero and Herbert with wisdom That Hermis in perfect condition would be able to shoulder 128 pounds hi the Brooklyn and Suburban and put up the race of his life was the prevalent opinion On pact performances it would appear that the handi ¬ capper has not asked too much of Hermis nor of Advance Guard both of which closed last years campaign in the East im a blaze of glory Those who remember how Conroy as a threeyearold won the Brooklyn in 1901 will keep a close watch on the Keene celts In ¬ junction Rigodon and Gimcrack which are in all three handicaps with feathers on their backs James Rowe who prepared Conroy will train these promising threeyearolds and if he points one of them for the Brooklyn or the Suburban Handicap the colt will receive no doubt consideration from the betting pub ¬ lic The three handicaps in point of entries weight and distance are virtually the same
