NEW ORLEANS GOSSIP Fair Grounds Meeting Not as Profitable as Formerly Diminished Receipts from Layers Reason Cold Weather Ar rives Statistics to Data NEW ORLEANS La February 4Rac ing is rapidly reaching its conclusion only eight more days remaining for this meeting It terminates Mardi Gras day Tuesday Feb ¬ ruary 13 13The The previous absence of winter made its arrival overnight felt keenly It seems aa if all the heretofore missing bad weather came in a lump The extreme cold is ac ¬ companied by a penetrating rain and its sud ¬ denness makes it the more disagreeable Ac ¬ cording to predictions the bad weather is due for a stay of several days With the steady stream of Mardi Gras visitors the attendance at the track Is not expected to suffer even if the disagreeable weather pre ¬ vails for the remainder of the racing term at the Fair Grounds GroundsIn In the matter of attendance the Fair Grounds meeting has shown about the same as last year but there has been a slump in receipts due to the shortage of layers who have operated this winter The revenue from this source has noticeably fallen off from previous years The heavy expense and the curtailed operations because of a scarcity of money is mainly responsible for the absence of many of the layers The last week brought the Fair Grounds racing its only scandalous publicity so far This was the result of several form reversals The chief of these was that of Edward Gray Ilia success and the following disqualification for fouling and the ruling against his trainer denying him the privilege of starting any more horses pending investigation of Ed ¬ ward Grays racing brings the only marring note of the meeting It is expected that the stewards will complete their investigation to ¬ morrow whsn Wiliiam Daniels in whose name and colors the horse races will appear before the officials officialsThe The proposed Jefferson Park meeting fol vlowing that at the Fair Grounds is holding the center of interest among the racing folks now Jiumors that the meeting will bo abandoned has been persistent of late but this the Jefferson Park management denies and counters that they are going steadily along with their plans to hold the Spring meeting at the Shrewsbury track from Feb uary 14 and continue until March 17 The first book of the meeting will be issued to owners next Wednesday and has been com ¬ piled by secretary J B Campbell CampbellSo So far no owner has won 10000 at the Fair Grounds Mose Goldblatt heads the list with 9300 followed by T J Pendor gast with 5400 and K R Bradley is third with earnings of 5300 Thirtysix other owners have won 1000 and over overThe The jockey standing Is close with Cor ¬ coran heading Pool and Mein with three more winning mounts having a total of twentythree Pool is rejardcd as the best jockey riding here but the apprentices have more opportunities because of their light weights Mein is promising and Corcoran will develop into a good rider
