the han ¬ dicaps on the flat run last year that forty five were won by the topweights sixteen by the lightest weighted horse and in fifteen the top weighted horse finished last This calcu ¬ lation of distances and the various age divisions but they tend to show that the horses in the middle weight division are more successful in handicaps than any other of the weights This has been proved by a study of the handicaps in Australia and it was made the subject of some interesting discussions An effort has been made to in a measure apply the same calculations to the handicap racing on this continent continentIt It was Motor Cop that carried the greatest weight to victory when he won with 143 pounds up but it was over the five and j half furlongs distance at Tijuana and not a race calculated to be an adequate test of any ¬ thing but sprinting speed As usual Extermi ¬ nator stood alone when it came to carrying high weights over long distances He reached his highest when he carried 138 pounds to victory in the mile and a quarter of the Ken ¬ tucky handicap He won the Brooklyn Handi ¬ cap at a mile and an eighth under 135 pounds and he carried 133 pounds to victory in both the mile and an eighth of the Clark Handi ¬ cap and the mile and a sixteenth of the Pim lico Spring Handicap In the Harford Handi ¬ cap at threequarters he won under 132 pounds and he had a like impost when he won the Toronto Autumn Cup at a mile and a quarter quarterExterminator Exterminator failed under the 140 pounds he was required to take up in Latonias Inde ¬ pendence Handicap at a mile and a half and near the end of the season his hard campaign ¬ ing under excessive weights was beginning to tell on him He was not himself through the fall campaign in Maryland and it was apparent in his races at Pimlico PimlicoKaiSang KaiSang the threeyearold son of The Finn won the Jerome Handicap at a mile under 133 pounds and on various other occasions proved himself a remarkable weight carrier carrierGrey Grey Lag has a front place among the weight carriers of 1922 He won the Empire City Handicap at a mile and an eighth under 132 pounds as well as the Saratoga Handi ¬ cap at a mile and a quarter under 130 and the Queens County Handicap at a mile under 127 pounds poundsMajor Major Thomas C McDowells good mare Dis ¬ tinction curried 132 pounds to victory but it was only at three quarters when she won the Quickstep Handicap HandicapMad Mad Hatters two notable weight carrying victories were in the Champlain Handicap at a mile and an eighth under 130 pounds and the Metropolitan turf when these various handicaps take in those that were of ¬ fered for twoyearolds as well as other ages agesIt It is the handicap division that is the di ¬ vision made up of the best horses and when the races are made of distances worth while for this class the racing secretaries arc doing their full duty dutyWhen When the distances are kept up tc stardard it means that the horses will be up to stand ¬ ard and there is little to quarrel about in the handicaps that were offered during the 1921 racing season
