CALCUTTASPOORRACE Runs Unplaced and Seems a Bad Derby Reliance Hermis Kemble Surprises by Win ¬ ning Over a Fast Track Ar dito First at a Long Price NEW ORLEANS La March 14 E K Brysons Setting Sun earned the right to share favoritism for the 10000 Louisiana Derby next Saturday the closing day of the Jefferson Park meeting by a splendid race in the mile and seventy yards handicap which featured todays racing He won with ease in a field that included older horses in addi ¬ tion to several other wellthought of Derby eligibles notably Calcutta which has been mentioned prominently as the probable win ¬ ner of Saturdays big race Setting Sun and Calcutta were highly regarded in a betting way the former being a slight favorite with Louis A also attracting attention while there was a last minute plunge on Plucky Betting wisdom seemed to be justified except in the case of Calcutta which ran poorly through ¬ out If his race this afternoon is a true guide to his present form then he might as well be an absentee from the race Saturday The outsider Jack Fairman held a good lead for the first half mile but Setting Sun raced to him with a rush when allowed and when in the stretch he soon raced into a good lead He was threatened near the end by Louis A but shook him off gamely and was going away at the end Louis A finished second and Pluckys rush carried him into third place placeGOOD GOOD THING VICTOR VICTORThere There was considerable support for Invic tus a son of Aulcain High Vale making his first appearance on the turf in the initial dash of the afternoon This colt had worked well and was looked upon in the nature of a good thing although Blue Monday was not overlooked overlookedInvictus Invictus won but his success was chiefly due to the superb riding of Thurber who out ¬ generaled Babin on Anne after the latter had taken a clear lead in the stretch The winner also had the best of the start though he showed fine speed when settled in his stride It was the general belief that with riders reversed Anne would have won Blue Mondays chances went glimmering by being caught in a jam soon after the start startThe The Garry Herrmann filly Galeta was the outstanding choice in the second race being backed to the exclusion of practically all the others She won but gave her admirers sev ¬ eral anxious moments There was nothing but gloom for them when she got away slowly and was ridden wide during the first half Entering the stretch she improved her position and then in the final eighth brought her backers to their feet when she squeezed through on the inside and in a sensational display of speed got up and snatched victory by the smallest of margins It was one of those spectacular finishes that no crowd could resist Great was the enthusiasm displayed and both horse and rider received a great ovaticn on the return to the scales scalesADVENTURE ADVENTURE QUITS QUITSAnother Another sparkling finish in the third race kept the crowd in a happy mood though in this case it was not the favorite that got home first In fact Ardito the winner had few admirers but that did not deter him from gamely holding on to a slight advan ¬ tage gained in the stretch to ultimately tri ¬ umph by a head Adventure was the favorite in this contest and flattered by taking the lead on the far turn only to quit badly when the real battle began Ardito was always in close contention and after dashing into the lead in the last eighth successfully withstood the repeated challenges of Old Chap to oust him himHermis Hermis Kemble surprised those who thought ho could only race well in heavy going by winning the fifth race without any particular trouble He was at 10 to 1 but raced as if even money would have been a long price taking a long lead on the backstretch and holding it to win by a comfortable margin from luk John with the favorite Mavour nteri bringing up in third place placeThe The final race of the afternoon found the threeyearold Bonfire a substantially backed first choice but the best he could do was to run second to the at one time useful racer Bolster which pansed tho favorite in tho stretch to win by the safe margin of three lengths Jacobina at a long price ran well enough to finish a respectable third There was a misguided plunge on AArar Aictor which cut his quotation from 10 to 1 to 4 12 to 1 but nothing came from it itAnticipate Anticipate will be out of racing for some time on account of a leg injury
