LOUISVILLE ACTIVITY Both Churchill Downs and Douglas Park Crowded with Horses Donges and Cartoonist Attracting1 Attracting1Attention Attention Firebrand to toBe Be Ready Early LOUISVILLE Ky March 14 Despite un ¬ favorable weather and a muddy track a large number of horses were at work yester ¬ day and today at Churchill Downs Several Kentucky Derby eligibles were seen under the saddle but their work was confined to exercise gallops gallopsDouglas Douglas Park is also the scene of much activity though no fast work was attempted in the muddy going goingPractically Practically every twoyearold at both tracks was brought out and the large gallery of railbirds evinced a keen interest in their appearance appearanceFor For the first time in years there is not a sick horse at cither the Downs or Douglas Park Usually this time of the year finds many thoroughbreds on the ailing list from one cause or another but a complete round of the stables at the two tracks yesterday revealed that every iacer which wintered here spent the cold months in excellent con ¬ dition The horses are further advanced in their training than usual at this time of the year This is especially true of the Derby eligibles eligiblesDonges Donges which races in the interest of John S AVard is attracting more attention than any of the other Derby hopes quartered at the Downs while Cartoonist in the H C Bud Fisher stable is the main reliance of the Douglas Park contingent The former has wintered in fine style and owner Ward is enthusiastic over his chances to annex tho rich prize As a twoyearold Donges was u topnotcher on the Kentucky circuit and ho gave every indication of being able to go a long distance distanceCARTOONIST CARTOONIST LOOKS GOOD GOODTrainer Trainer Alex B Gordon has Cartoonist well along in his training and the colt presents a splendid appearance Gordon is a trainer of more than ordinary ability and he can be depended upon to have the Mutt and Jeff representative in his best form on May 19 the day of the big race raceThe The Fisher string had a close call Monday morning when the high wind lifted the roof oft of an adjoining barn which was vacant and it settled directly on the roof of tho stable which houses the noted cartoonists outfit Outside of scaring the Fisher horses no damage was done but considerable ex ¬ citement ensued for thirty minutes or more moreThe The Jefferson Livingston string under the care of trainer Al Kirby evidently spent an excellent winter Firebrand the 540000 prize of this establishment appears a bit high in llesh but he will be ready for the races a bit earlier than Tisual this spring Kirby has seventeen horses in his charge and with tho exception of Newmarket which was pur ¬ chased for 15000 last year all are in active training Newmarket was gelded during the winter and he will be an absentee from the races until well along in the summer summerKIRIJY KIRIJY TO SELL KED ARROAV ARROAVKirby Kirby has a Kentucky Derby candidate of his own Red Arrow a son of Ballot Miss Declare but he will dispose of him befon the big race as he has an agreement with Livingston to sell all his horses and devoto all of his time to the training of the Liv ¬ ingston racers racersThe The stables of Harry Herdel and AVilliam AVilliamDondas Dondas came in from Havana while B J JBrannon Brannon brought his string from New Or leans The latter came back with only t eo eoI I horses but he will take up four which ha been turned out here for the winter winterPrince Prince K the Kentucky Derby hope in the stable of L F Marshall developed into a splendid looking horse during the winter His owner is confident that he will render an excellent account of himself in the big event barring mishaps and he is training i in line style Courtship which has been an old standby in the Marshall barn for years is still on the job Marie Miller a fast daughter of Abe Frank which won a number of races in the Marshall colors was bred to Courtship last spring and she is expected to foal shortly She is at Carr Piatts farm near Lexington Ky KyJockey Jockey Joe Kederis who spent the greater part of the winter at his home in Seattles Vash has returned and will ride for Horned Brothers local turfmen Kcdcris alway takes the best of care of himself and ho reported to his employers ready for work
