Bracadale Finishes First in Colorado Stakes, but Is Disqualified in Favor of Lucky Play. ♦ NEW YORK, N. Y., May 12.— Grey Lag, hero of many notable conquests for the Ran- cocas Stable, demonstrated he was far su- perior to his opponents in the Excelsior Handicap at Jamaica today when he won pulled up by open daylight. This mile and a sixteenth stake race featured an excellent week-end program, an offering which attracted another capacity crowd. Grey Lag took up 130 pounds and made the pace all the way, winning as La-verne Fator willed. Exodus was a driving second, while Prince James was a fast coming third. An official decision deprived the Rancocas Stable of a stake race double when the stewards ruled that Bracadale had fouled August Belmonts Lucky Play in the pre- . ceding Colorado Stakes, a five-eighths race for two-year-olds. Tester, a stablemate of Bracadale, was not included in the original . ruling of the stewards, even though the Jockey Club rules specifically state that if one of an entry is disqualified the other must be. This gave second place to Mr.- Mutt and third to Dazzler. Fator rushed Grey Lag away from the barrier at his best speed in the Excelsior Handicap and stole through on the inside at the clubhouse turn when Brainstorm made a wide turn. Once in front he was taken under slight restraint for the remainder of the race. Exodus raced in closest pursuit all the way and John McTaggart had a hard job in holding him in on the final turn. Prince James, after making a slow beginning, came with a rush through the final quarter. Lucky Play was the best horse in the Colorado Stakes. Dugan, after being in tight quarters for three-eighths, tried to crowd his way through on the inside when turning for home. He bumped Miss Cameo to the other side at the three-sixteenths post and caused her to strike the fence, then finished gamely. After the red board had been placed the officials were notified of their error and Tester, which had been moved up to second place, was deprived of that placing. DOUBLE FOR RANCOCAS STABLE. Despite the fact Bracadale was disqualified in the Colorado Stakes, the Rancocas Stable scored a double when Whirlwind took the measure of Osprey from the August Belmont stable, Atherstone, the Sanford Stud Farms entry, taking third from Romping Home. Whirlwind took the lead when the start came and never left the result in doubt, win-j ning under mild pressure from the hard ridden Osprey. Atherstone, outrun for five-eighths, finished fast in the last eighth and easily held safe Romping Home, which had raced forwardly in the early running. Modo, after frequent disappointments, accounted for the California Handicap at five and a half furlongs, winning by a length from Silk Tassel, which took second place by three lengths in front of Ray Jay, the latter outlasting Avisack by a nose for third place. Modo, Avisack and Silk Tassel outran their opponents at the start. Avisack was the quickest to find her stride and she drew away into a two-lengths lead from Silk Tassel, with Modo following three lengths away. Modo came with great speed in the last sixteenth and he quickly wore Silk Tassel down and was going away with a length to spare at the end. A :
