The Finn, Fair Play and Stefan the Great Stand at ,000 Each Four Others Are at ,300 Each. The growth and stability of the American breeding industry is strikingly illustrated in the confidence of American breeders in going abroad and paying substantial prices for stallions and mares to strengthen their establishments. There is also an excellent barometer of the prosperous conditions now existing in the field of thoroughbred production in the stallion fees prevailing in this country. Two American sires Broomstick and Man o War are listed at ,500 each. The Finn, daddy of Zev, stands at ,000, as does Fair Play, sire of Man o War. There is still another at ,000 in Stefan the Great, the grand English stallion imported to this country last year by Joseph E. Widener, and which is now located at Elmendorf Stud in Kentucky. Four arc listed at ,500 each, they being George Smith, Whisk Broom II., Archaic and Hourless. Then there are ten at ,000 each, as follows: Nassovian, Paragon II., Ambassador IV., Campfirc, Royal Canopy, Chicle, Pennant, Peter Pan, Sir Barton and Brown Prince. There are a number of other stallions standing in this country for which no stud fee is named, and service for them is arranged by private contract. If the terms in some of these transactions were made known larger figures than mentioned above might be revealed. In a majority of instances the books of the stallions listed at the top prices are filled full for 1921, indicating in no uncertain terms the desire of the breeders to have the best at any price.
