Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Jan. 15, 1904 The great five-year-old mare Gunfire, by Hastings Royal Gun, winner of the Mermaid Stakes and the Twin City Handicap in 1902 and the Metropolitan Handicap in 1903, has been shippsd from La Belle Farm to Aiken, S. C. There she will join the horses which will wear the colors of the president of the Saratoga Association next season and will contest in all her stake engagements for this year. All the horses at the Long Island courses are having a good time of it in the snow, both on the tracks and on the boulevard. Fred Burlew had his string out yesterday in two sets. Thsy were on the- track. Charles El-wood, Beldame, Hello and Embarrassment were leading ten of the two-year-olds in a slow gallop. Hello has improved wonderfully and, barring accident, will come out in the spring a grand three-year-old. Burlcws sscond set is made up of seventeen two-year-olds, of which the pick is the 6,000 youngster by Rapallo out of the St. Simcn mare Mrs. Dcaney. Tom Welsh had his two-year-olds out, led by Hurst-bourne and Knight Errant. This latt;r, the son of Trenton and St. Mildred, is rough looking, but a big and hearty looking fellow that bears all over him the marks of a cheerful and resolute colt. The stable has high hopes for him. When Delhi was at his best there was little to chcoss between the pair, both working together for the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga. Hurstbourne, always a bit better than esteemed, is also looking well. The Ben Brush celts in Welshs string are more than likely looking. Stevedore and Handwork made up the first set out from Frank Taylors barn. McChesncy and Grand Opera went out later! and, after kicking around the track, did a slow j gallop. In Karricks lot Smart Sets legs show some improvement, as do McDowells, although McDowell is a heavy horse on his pins and hard to train. Wotan, in the Hampton Stabb, is in good winter shape. He stands in the stall next to Africanders and with the two-year-clds takes exercise about the shed daily. At Shccpshead Bay the Paget string continues to make use of the snow to do light work on. Joyncr, who has three sets to look after, has unquestionably the best looking lot of two-year-olds stabled on Long Island. With Water-boy and Hamburg Belle and these two-year-olds he may look the future in the face without feeling he is doing anything unwarranted. John Huggins was his guest for luncheon and said he never had seen a better looking or more promising set. Jim McCormick took a run down yesterday to look over his lot in Frank McCanns charge, all of which were in fine fettle. At Brighton Beach Billy Lakeland had his string out on the backstretch doing slow gallops.
