DOINGS AT ORIENTAL PARK S. C. Nuckols One of Busiest Officials at Marianao Course. Two-Tear-Olds Seen Under Colors Well Educated at the Barrier President Monalian Takes to Golf. HAVANA, Cuba, Jan. 15. S. C. Nuckcls, who is presiding steward and handicapper at Oriental Park, is one of the busiest officials on the grounds. Previous to each race he is a visitor to the paddock and notes the condition and appearance of a horse. He is a strict disciplinarian for clean riding and gentlemanly tactics at all times, and many a. jockey has found to his sorrow that he could not take a chance with rough tactics and get away with it. The return of starter James Milton, who was called North to his home in Baltimore on business prior to the Christmas holidays, brought the official family back to its original formation. Lester Dean, who handled the barrier in Miltons absence, was warmly complimented upon his sterling work by almost every one at the course. The two-year-olds which have been seen under colors here since the first of the year, are a good-looking lot and pronounced collectively the best crop that has been educated in .Cuba in many years. Their barrier education is worthy of more than passing note. Under the constant drilling of assistants Hodgins, Welter and Friend at the starting gate each day the youngsters lined up per-j fectly for the first trial on January 2. I Thomas Monahan, president of the Havana Jockey Club, has become a keen student of golf. He considers the Country Club links the finest spot in Cuba, outside of Oriental Park. He is anxiously counting the days before the arrival of his friend. Matt J. Winn. Racing Secretary William Shelley is becoming one of the regulars at the Saturday night clubhouse gatherings. Joseph Francis Dowd, a great admirer of the thoroughbred, considers Cuba one of the finest wintering places in the world. Mr. Dowd has one of the show places at Croton, N. Y., near James Butlers East "View Farm.
