. : i i i FINALE AT CULVER CITY Second Attempt to Conduct "Bet-less" Meeting Near Los Angeles Meets With Failure. LOS ANGELES, Cal., Feb. 5. The inevitable came to pass yesterday when the race meeting at Culver City was called off for the second and last time. The Southern California Jockey Club opened at Culver City on Christmas Day with an incompleted plant after trying the impossible in building a race track overnight. It was expected that the attendance would be largo enough to pay for the construction work as well as the purses for the horsemen. However, "betless" racing between mediocre horses failed to attract the big crowd pected and financial difficulties soon embarrassed the management. The sport was conducted for thirteen clays and then a postponement was announced to Saturday, January 2G. Few ever expected to see it revived, but the persistent Dick Ferris did manage to get financial aid and the racing was resumed on schedule. The second attempt was no more successful than the first and the end came yesterday. The track will be reconstructed for automobile racing according to Dick Ferris, promoter of the ill-fated venture.
