Twenty Years. Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Feb. 6, 1904 Racing at New Orleans, Los Angeles and Oakland. "Father" Bill Daly is an early bird. With an eye on the spring meeting at Benning he had some of his horses out in the Coney Island boulevard last Friday. The snow made a soft footing for the racers and the were allowed to trot freely. Tather" Bill followed in his road wagon, shouting instructions to the midgets who had the mounts. Scorpios victory today in the third race at New Orleans marked the ninth consecutive win for the old gelding at this meeting. Starting" for the first time on January 4 of this year, he ran second to Big Ben in a five-eighths dash, but since that time he has rung up victory after victory until now his score for 1901 is ten starts, nine wins and one second. Scorpio is now seven years old and is a bay, by Chorister Zodiac, and runs in the colors of E. Trotter and Co. The Club House Handicap was the feature race at the Crescent City today and resulted in a stirring battle between Tribes Hill and De Reszkc, with the former getting a neck decision over the Hayman racer. The conditions were three-j-ear-olds and over, at one mile, with ,000 added. Tribes Hill was away slowly, but jockey Calahan rushed him up to the front in the run down the back-stretch and, going around the leaders at the far turn, took command without much effort, but had to be hard ridden near the end to withstand De Reszkes resolute finish. The latter tired suddenly at the three-quarters post, but came again in the stretch. Clangor ran well, but was crowded into the deep going at the turn for home and finished third, eight lengths in the rear of De Reszke. The Burns Handicap, one. and one-quarter miles, with a value of 0,000, attracted sixteen starters at ths Ingleside course, San Francisco, Cal., today. This stake, the most important to be decided on the west coast, after months of speculation as to the probable winner, resulted in a victory for a colt whose name had not even been mentioned in connection with this handicap. Modicum, bay celt, four, by St. Gatien Moderocio, ridden by Hildebrand and owned by D. S. Fountain, to the surprise of the large attendance of turfites of the present meeting, decisively defeated the best and largest band of racers thai has ever contested for the Burns Handicap. The weather was bad and as a result the track was sloppy. Modicum, a superlative mudlark that on his best form was pitchforked into this race, received a lucky start and after going the first eighth took a small lead and under skillful rating by Hildebrand forced a fast and even pace, coming away with a lot in reserve in the stretch run. Claude, a frequent stake winner during 1903, was second, having a nose advantage over Oarsman as they flashed past the line. Ths net value to Mr. Fountain was ,850. Arcade, Proper, Horton, Fossil, Faulconbridge, Joe Lesser, Ben Mac Dhui, Horatius, Nigrette, Major Tenny, Eonic, Ar-gregor and Dainty were the also rans.
