WINTER SEASON IN FRANCE La Montagne Stable Jumpers Finish First and Third in Big Race. Lc Goliath Carries Owners Colors to Victory In Grand Prix de Pan Trainer Count Succeeds with Steeplechasers. PARIS, France, Feb. 5. The climax of the racing season in the south of France was reached Sunday when the Grand Prix de Pau was run. Almost all of the large crowd which attended the meeting at Pau went with the intention of backing the La Montagne stable for the big race. The betting was almost confined to this pair, Le Goliath and Front Side, and both were backed heavily for place as w"ell as to win. As Le Goliath won and Front Side filled the third position, the public had little to complain about. At one time in the race Gorey had a substantial lead and it was only a question as to whether he could maintain the pace he had set. But as it proved, Le Goliath had a lot in hand and when the field turned into the straight and cleared the last jump, Le Goliath swept to the front and left Gorey almost standing still, winning by four lengths. Gorey was second and Front Side third. There was a field of eight for the race and the prize was 50,000 francs. The public also had a plunge in the Prix de lArmagnac, when another of M. La Montagnes horse3. Saint Yorre, was an odds-on favorite and again confidence was not misplaced, for Saint Yorre won in a canter. A MUTUEL FREAK. Pau has also provided one of those pari-mutuel curiosities which occur occasionally. There are two pari-mutuels, one for the paddock and another for the outside public. In the former a horse was returned at S to 1, while outside the price was a trifle less than 2 to 1. Nothing succeeds like success and" it seems especially true with regard to H. Count, our leading trainer on the flat last season. During the winter he has been running some of his numerous charges over the sticks and recently has met with the same success as he did last year when he turned out more winners than any other trainer in France. Last week he scored three victories in one day and on another occasion, two and at the recent meeting at Cannes hardly a day passed without his stable scoring a success. One of the principal events last week at Cannes was the Prix du Casino Municipal, in which Petsik, trained by Count, won one of the easiest victories. Petsik for long has performed the thankless but necessary task of pacemaking for Flechois, the best stayer France has produced for years. Petsik, apparently rejoicing in the fact that he was no longer being asked to show the way to Flechois, won as he liked from Filou. Another feature of the meeting was the success of Bedeloup, the jockey, who in four races rode two firsts and two seconds. Blue skies and brilliant sunshine have favored all the meetings on the Riviera during the past month and Sunday was no exception to the rule at Cannes, when the Cannes Hurdle race was run. The paddock, as usual, presented its brilliant pageant of fashion. There was a thrilling finisli to the hurdle race, although two of tne best, backed horses Mirebcau If. and Lis had nothing to do with it. The winner was Red Jack, but it was only a few yards from the post that Bedeloup was able, to take a slight lead, which was stated officially to be half a length, but looked more like a neck. Mexican Eagle was second and Orange Verte third, all within about a length of one another. This was Red Jacks third victory in just over a week, which augurs well for the future of this young jumper. His victory was possibly made easier by the fall of Lis near the end of the race. This animal has been displaying good form and it will not be long before he atones for this failure. The meeting also provided some compensation for the Comte dEstourmel, who last week had an aggravating sequence of three thirds. This time he was luckier, LEtang winning the first race and La Perle the second race.
