; i , i Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Feb. 26, 1904 Racing at New Orleans, San Francisco and Los Angeles. It is denied that the horses belonging to Mr. W. C. Whitneys estate are to be sold. Jockey Bullman has left the employ of Boots and Hollenbeck. They disagreed as to Bull-mans handling of Formaster in the California Derby. McChesney, Major Daingerfield and Hello, three of the fastest thoroughbreds at Sheeps-head Bay track, were out . galloping today. Big Mac went three miles at a two-minute clip, tugging lustily on the reins all the way. Ths western crack is in perfect physical condition. Major Daingerfield went a couple of miles and Hello cantered a similar distance. The track was in fine condition for slow work, as nearly all the frost Irad been harrowed out by superintendent Dumphy. Fred Burlew has more horses than any other trainer at Gravescnd. With those of his own, Newton Benningtons and Pierre LoriHards, there arc so many that he has scattered them in four barns on the Boulevard side of the course. It is no stable secret that great things are expected this year of Charles Elwood and Beldame, castoffs from the stable of J. B. Haggin and August Belmont respectively. But" the chief reliance is placed upon the two-year-olds in the barns and the best of these also are either Haggin or Belmont bred. The stewards at New Orleans today refused further entry of all horses owned, wholly or in part, by H. T. Griffin. This action arose from Griffin sending the mong filly to the paddock in the second race, in which Sweet Pepper started and won. He sent Sweet Pepper over from his stable about five minutes before post time. By this time he had his money down and made the biggest killing of his turf career. He has three chestnut two-yew-old fillies here. Sweet Pepper was the best, but the touts who have caught her work did not know her name. ,
