: MR. MUTT "HARD AS NAILS" Bud Fishers Derby Candidate in Fine Fettle Wise Counsellor Ready for Spring Training. LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 16. Mr. Mutt, cartoonist "Bud" Fishers best barrel for the Kentucky Derby, is impressing work watchers by the way he is training at Douglas Park for the Derby. While trainer Gordon is not rushing the son of Ballot, he has been worked three-quarters of a mile in 1 :20. That Mr. Mutt is advanced in his training is the word that comes from that course and that he looks as "hard as nails" and seems to have all the speed in the world, is the opinion of the persons who have been watching the progress made by Mr. Mutt for the past fortnight. Wise Counsellor" has worked sprinting dis- tances in his preparation for the Derby twice since last Sunday, when he covered three-eighths of a mile in company with his Derby companion, Worthmore, in :42. Since then Wise Counsellor knocked off a couple of seconds from that work. That the Derby favorite is in fine fettle is beyond question. He is training healthily and will soon be ready to gallop unusually fast and far in his work. His owner-trainer, John S. Ward, is looking for better odds than six to one about his colt and is anxious to back him at 10 to 1, if it can be obtained. He considers the G to 1 now is far too short a price, even though he considers him the best horse he ever trained. Superintendent Tom Young received a telegram today that Mose Goldblatts stable would arrive at the Downs Sunday. There are seventeen head in the Goldblatt string and it is expected that the stable will be augmented here by several horses from the Whitney farm. Al Kirby has notified Mr. Young he will be here with the string of Jefferson Livingston sometime during next week. Glide, a filly owned by Harned Brothers and Jones, a Derby eligible, has quite a local following for Derby honors. This filly is training well and has been cantered slow quarters in :26.
