BEAU BUTLER VICTOR ♦ E. R. Bradleys Derby Hope Makes Auspicious Debut. . Shows Impressive Performance in Taking Measure of Graeme, Altawood and Others. • LEXINGTON. Ky.. April 29.— In the first test of three-year-olds regarded as having winning chances in the Kentucky Derby. ■L R. Bradleys Idle Hour Farm-owned i Beau Butler, winner of last years Maryland Futurity, triumphed decisively over i Graeme, with Altawood in third place. The | meeting of the colts came in the Raceland Burse, a mile and 70 yards, five answering the call and the Gallaher Bros. Chilhowee was a pronounced choice at odds on. Baffling, a stable companion to Beau Butler, was the other starter. He was quite a factor in Beau Butlers success. He forced Chilhowee to sustain a terrific pace in the early stages, which benefited Beau Butler extensively, for Dyke kept him in close pursuit, and when Chilhowee, as a result of the hard I I pressure put on him by Baffling, began , displaying signals of distress. Beau Butler rushed into command and during the last I eighth was well under restraint. Chilhowee, when he did begin to falter, crumbled fast and despite Garners hard riding, he dropped steadily rearward and ■ finished outside the placed ones. Graeme | stood the final drive well, but was steadily succumbing to Altawood. The latter closed a big pap and was going fast at the end. , i The time of the race, considering the dull track, was creditable, the last mile being run in slightly better than 1 :39. On the strength of his race this afternoon. Beau But It r becomes the principal mainstay i i of the Idle Hour Farm Stable. He will not lack for supporters in the big throng that ! [ will view the running of the Jubilee Derby on May 17. »A5GKROrS IN THE MUD. Should Churchill Downs track be muddy Derby day. Altawood will come in for some sharp support by astute horsemen. With improved weather and a good racing offering came a return of generous patronage and they witnessed some excellent sport. • The finishes in a majority of instances were of the hard driving variety, the winners being in doubt until the closing strides. Well-backed starters were winners in all the races. Several of the successful ones were at short prices, notably Elemental and Dress Goods. The latter was one of the t-asiest winners of the afternoon. Her success came in the sixth race, in which she met youngsters of her own sex. It was only a romp for her to stay in advance and win by a comfortable margin from Cream Buff, with an outsider, Vain Kllie, in third place. Judging- by her impressive victory, senator Allie W. Young has a good filly. The sport began with an upset when Paul Mieou. a handy winner yesterday, failed to get a part of the purse. Barkes presence in the saddle contributed to the stout support for him. The winner turned up in H. Oofs Welcome, ridden by the apprentice Griffin. It was the first winner the youngster had ridden and he showed ability. He was loudly applauded on his return to weigh in. Finday and Auntie Millin divided the shorter portions of ihe purse. Hal Brice Headleys Elemental was given confident support in the second race and he won throughout from Funice Bailey, with Old Top in third place. There was considerable activity about Richelieu and Cuba Encanto in the race, but neither were factors after the first quarter. ROMP FURNISHES UPSET. W. Berkins llomp furnished the upset of the third race, in which two-year-olds met. Bump led by a good margin for the entire way, with Elm just lasting to outstay I„ouis Rubenstein. The latter was ridden by Parke and it marked the first two-year-old he has piloted this year. Mexican Tea was victress of the fourth race. She had the purse to her credit after she disposed of Napoo in the first quarter. Napoos elimination was complete in the stretch and it enabled Cussie 1*. to finish second and Domination up in time to finish third. The closing race fell to the outstanding favorite Kinburn. It was the frst victory that Gallaher Brothers had scored during ttM meeting. Timbrel, hard urged, landed in second place and Major Chilton finished third. Before departure for Ballim re tonight, fhacolet was worked the mile and a quarter distance in I $ well in hand. Jockey M.
