1 w Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of May 9, 1904 Racing at Morris Park. Worth, Louisville, Kansas City, Union and Delmar Parks at St. Louis. After some spirited bidding Leonidas, the crack three year eld by Hamburg out of the imported Hampton mare Boise, was purchased Saturday by E. E. Smathers for 6,000. It was the top price obtained at the paddock sale at Morris Park when over a score of thorough breds from the stable of the late William C. Whitney were passed over to the highest bid ders. Many owners and trainers were gath ered around the ring and good prices were obtained. The figure paid for Leonidas was not considered extravagant, as he is a colt of great speed and sameness and is engaged in such rich stakes as the Belmont, Realization, Brighton Derby, Annual Champion and Sara ! toga Handicap. Once around the ring in hat sticky going so much to his liking and through a shower, Gregor K. led an inferior field to the wire • j today at Worth. It was his fifth time out in 1 eight days and, tht ugh he won easily enough 1 after shaking off Forehand in the stretch, he I pulled up with an appearance calculated to j invest a close observer with the idea that he will hardly do in better company. He has been J second to both Port Royal and By Ways and I , third to English Lad and Witfull and will I probably be able to repeat those performances, but he must show more improvement than I ; was exemplified in his race of today. The colt was much admired.
