I Sarazen and St. James Out of Derby The latest and most startling development in connection with the Golden Jubilee Kentucky Derby came from *he Ka.-d in the announcement that both Sarazen and St. Jam?s were virtually declared out of the big Kentucky race. The decision to withdraw Sarazen was made known in the following di.iatch : NEW YORK. X. Y.. May S. Sarazen, owned by Mrs. V. K. Vanderbilt II., will not run in he Kentucky Derby, May 17. This was announced by Max Hirsch. hit trainer, who saiil .hat the champion two-year-oil of last ear had n t h.e.vn the expected improvement in his work sine? defeated in his first start this year by Bracadala. That was followed by ihe later notice of St. James being unable to start in the Preaknes next Monday and doubt as to his being sent to Kentucky, the following message being self explanatory : NEW YORK, N. Y.. May B. St. James, the most talked of colt for both the Preaknes.-. to be run Monday, and the Kentucky Derby, to lie run May 17. will not be a starter in the first named Make and there is a doubt of his bing sent to Kentucky. Thursday morning he came out of his final mile and an e ghth trial for the Preakness a bit lame and his car reservation for the jt urney to Baltia* re via eaaccBed. Opinions differed in regard to the extent of the lameness of Mr. Wideners great three year old. but it was agreed that there were .-inns of unmistakable limping as the son of Am aPPJafOI IV. and Bobolink II. finished his ta.-k. It was agreed that apart from the buneness the work «a- by no means an impressive one. After the manner in which St. James took the measure of Zev in the Paumonok Handicap the I opening day of the New York racing season he was proclaimed the best colt that had been shown this year. A. J. Joyner, who developed St. James, has been confined to his home through illness since before the opening of the New York racing season and has been directing the training by telephone, whJe J. Creery has been in charge of the stable.
