RAINING AND WINTRY « More Like February Than May at Jamaica Friday, » • Fluvanna Makes Auspicious Debut — Arizona Handicap Easy for Enobbie. ♦ NEW YORK, N". Y.. May 9.— It was more like a February than a May day at Jamaica Friday, and to add to the discomfort of the bleak cold weather there were frequent cold showers of rain to make it just a bit more uncomfortable. Naturally this resulted in a falling off in the attendance and few except of the bravest regulars put in an appearance. The track was muddy from the heavy fall of rain and scratches were numerous and some winners came from unexpected quarters. One of the worth-while happenings of the day was the return of the Salubria Stables Fluvanna. She was making her first appearance of the year and she made a show of her company. This race was a five and a half furlongs for three-year-old fillies, and Fluvanna under 12t» pounds was giving away great lumps of weight to every starter. The Arizona Handicap over the mile and seventy yards distance was the real feature of the day and it proved easy for Mrs. J. A. Coburns Knobbie. and Richard T. Wilsons Forest Lore raced to second place with Sandy McNaughtons Little Celt, the top weight, saving third from F. K. Browns Hophaistes. Knobbie, always at home in the muddy fcoing, raced at once into a long lead and he had speed enough to hold his advantage throughout. Little Celt was running in second place with Cano third. Forest Lore fourth and Hephaistos bringing up the rear. on the turn out of the backstretch Hephaistos began to move up, and he made up his ground in a manner to suggest that he would be a contender. He continued to close ground to the stretch, but Mooney, either through his incompetence or intentionally, messed him about so that in the run home he j j did not have a chance. In the meantime I Forest Lore slipped through on the inside, and Little Celt also beat him home. The performance of Mooney was disgraceful, but he has BO frequently been guilty of bad rides that he is probably merely a bad jockey. TWO FOK SALl BRI A STABLE. The Salubria Stable accounted for a double when Bella Artiste was winner of the fifth race, at a mile and seventy yards. Mrs. A. Swenkes Despair eared second place, and H. Loscalzos Ldward Cray was third. The winner, ridden by B. Hreuning. dominated the running from the start and at no stage lift the result in serious doubt. The »akridge Stables Laurano. a three-year-old son of 1eter lan and Iassan, was winner of the three-Ojaarten that was the second offering and he showed a decided liking for the going when he led from end to end. The Ham-ocas Stables Honor was second throughout and was the only one of the company that showed a semblance of contest. but could never seriously menace the winner. The Helair Studs Honnie Omar was best of the others but he was beaten off eight lengths by Honor, and the others were well strung out. Fluvanna, the good three-year-old filly that race* BBC the Salubria Stable, made her first appearance of the year in a five and a half furlong dash Bdr horses of her sex, and her raea was a decidedly impressive one, when under the top weight of 1-C pounds she made a show of her company. Harry Iayne Whitneys Margin sav. i second place and Exalted Ituler racing for Mrs. A. Sweiike was third. It was a s 1 start but Fluvanna almost at once treat into the lead, while Kxalted Ruler and Margin, well lapped, followed her. Margin was on the inside and Kxalted Ruler raced alongside in a position that kept her secure in the BSSp going. SlIKKMELY CONFIDENT. Legere rode Fluvanna with supreme confidence and when he had her nicely clear of the others he sat still and permitted the filly to gallop along at her own pleasure. Through the stretch Margin, under pr. ssure, outgamed Kxalted Ruler right at the end to take bsssbmI place. Ray Bcherrera Kumonin was winner of the opening race of the afternoon. Which engaged a mediocre Held of two-year-olds under churning conditions. W. V. Caseys Cipsy Flyer finish, d second, while Wood Stocktons Baa Tide was third. Tin- winner was ridden by Allen and rao d in the rear during the first part, but gained st. adily under pressure and. losing with BSjsasjMsa, ■wore down Cipsy lly.r and was drawing clear at the end. Cipsy Flyer shewed a high order of speed in the early running, but tired badly when the crucial test came.
