MUMTAZ MAHAL DEFEATED Lord Roseberys Plack Triumphs Over the Gray Speed Marvel in the One Thousand Guineas. SPECIAL CABLEGRAM. NEWMARKF.T, England. May 9.— The Aga Khans sensational gray filly, Munitaz Mahal, daughter of The Tetrarch and Lady Josephine, made her debut as a three-year-old here today and went down to defeat in the One Thousand Guineas before Lord Roseberys PtacSjL a daughter of Hurry On and Groat. Sir Edward Hultons Strait Lace, a daughter of Son-in-Law and Stolen Kiss, was third. The weather was clear and bright and a good crowd turned out for the second of the English classics. Sixteen three-year- old fillies started in the race, which is run over the Rowley Mile course. Munitaz Mahal was a strong favorite at C to 5. Strait Lace was at 7 to 2 and the | winner at 8 to 1. Maid of Bath was at 10 to 1 and 20 to 1 could be had against any of the others. Munitaz Mahal was favored ■ by conditions and Hulme placed her well in ; the early running. Her appearance was im- rpresslve, but she seems to have lost some of the electric speed which made her such a sensational attraction last year. After going three-quarters she was through and succumbed readily to Plack. Plack ha 1 been well placed by Elliott in the early running, and when Munitaz Mahal b.gan to tire the daughter of Hurry On raced into the lead and drew away to win by a length and a half. Munitaz Mahal saved second ! place by a half length and ONeill rode Strait ■ I,ace out sharply to beat Mink for third. 1 Etonwick tinished fifth and Golden Emblem I sixth.
