ZEV AGAIN DEFEATED ♦ . Finishes Third to Rialto and Sun- sini in Excelsior Handicap. • . Tijuana Futurity Winner, Master Charlie, Scores Impressive Triumph in Colorado Stakes. mCW YORK. W. Y.. May 10— Rialto. from the Greentree Stable, in a gamely fought finish, was winner of the Kxcelsior Handicap at Jamaica today, and the lightly weighted Sunsini, from the Kilane Stable. was just a hand further back and a length and a quarter before the mighty Ser, with old Mad Hatter, also from the Rancocas Stable, rather a distant fourth. C. H. Thi.r-rots Prince James followed and J. S. Cos-dens Dunlin waa last of the company. The race was worth ,S30 to the winner. The mile and a sixteenth was run in 1 :4G over a slijw track. Though the weather was disagreeably cold and rain threatened most of the afternoon there was a big crowd on hand and the sport that was furnished was worthy of the attendance. In the Kxcelsior Zev had drawn number one position and Mad Hatter had number two, but as usual Mad Hatter was taken to the outside on account of his bad post manners. Kittle time was lost at the barrier and with the exception of Dunlin the field want away in good alignment. The Cosden colt wheeled slightly undi r the inexperienced Maiben and lost considerable ground as a raanlt Rialto, beginning from an inside berth, was away flying and Corcoran made every use of that advantage, rushing him along next the inside rail. Sunsini was right after him and Zev, fighting lor his head, was in third place on the h. ,1s of Rialto and held in there by Sunsini. Mid Hatter was almost with his stablemate, but further out from the rail, and Dunlin, after his bad luck at the Continued on sixteenth page. ZEV AGAINJEFEATED Continued from first pase. start, quickly headed the sluggish Prince James. Through the backstretch there was little change in these positions and Fator had lev under a stiff restraint. Going to the far turn he moved up slightly with the son of The Finn and he quickly went to second place, but Rialto was still racing strongly a length and a half to the good. Callahan was keeping his place with Sunsini and Mad Hatter raced at his heels. C. D. Sedleys Irotocol graduated from the maiden ranks when he was an easy winner Of the fifth race at three-quarters. E. II. Carrisons Hands Ip raced to frond place, while J. S. Wards Exit was third. The winner was a forward contender from the start and after racing his opponents into defeat had speed in reserve. He finish..! going strong on his own courage, while Exit after Baring ground entering the stretch outlasted Cue-Ruck in the Una] drive. George Petersons Shine On, at a long price, was winner of the last race of the afternoon, which engaged a band of thr. . -year-olds and over, non-winners. High Commander finished second while Warr.nton was third. The winner dominated the running from the start and just lasted to stall off the rush of High Commander at the end. Swinging around the bend it appeared that Zer would surely come on, but he did not relish the placing in the early stages and he hung when called on, while Rialto held to his lead. Sunsini was racing strongly on the inside and it seemed that Callahan would try to come through there, but when Rialto made a short turn into the Stretch there was no room and he had to change his course. As he swung out to come around Rialto, Sunsini slightly interfered with Z.-v and the Lilune gelding went out unnecessarily wide. He raced strongly under Callahans vigorous drive, but he failed by a stride to catch Rialto and the Greentree Stable colt was winner by a head. Zev had tired at the end, but readily outiinished Mad Hatter. YVilliam Daniels Master Charlie, winner of the Tijuana Futurity, proved beat in the Colorado, the companion piece to the Ex-relsior. and he ran an excellent race when h- took up his weight and covered the five-eighths in 1 :00% through the slow going. At the end he was going away from P. H. Sims Al.x Woodliffe and two lengths further away the Ranco. as Stables Peda-tie heat Harry Payne YVTiitneys Elf for third rathr handily. The race was worth ,G50 net to the winn. r. Undoubtedly Master Charlie was favor. 1 in the going, but he had to be much the seat to be the winner. Alex Woodliffe. tearing the post running, opened up an early lead, with Master Chartt* right after him. Then shortly altar tearing the amckstretea Butwell took the Dani. Is colt up and Al.x Woodliffe Increased his lead until when turning for home he look-d all over a winner. Through the last eighth Master Charlie closed with a gnat rush under P.ulw.-Hs drive and at the end he was winner by half a length. The st.it.l-- that .1. ;.
