i j 1 j , EARLY DERBY PREPARATION 1 Drowsy Waters Goes Mile Monday in 1:43 % at Churchill Downs. — i Captain Hal Works Three-Quarters In ItMtt Latest Tnrf Gossip From the Louisville Tracks. ♦ LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 6.— Dan Lehans home-bred colt. Drowsy Waters, showed one of the most impressive Derby gallops of the spring training season when at Churchill Downs this morning he was set down for a mile gallop and ran the distance easily in 1 :43 £. His time equaled that made by Captain Hal in a workout last week, and comes within one-fifth of a second of the fastest mile of the year to date, credited to Lee O. Cotner. The colt ran along at an even pace and the watchers caught him in the following fractions: 12%, 2o%, 38%, 51, 1:04%, 1:17%. 1:30% and 1:43%. W. A. Porter, business agent for the J. K. L. Ross stable, and acting for W. J. Marston. Chicago realtor, purchased from Keene Bros, the speedy three-year-old Mr. Pepp. The purchase price was not made public, but was a big one. Mr. Marston is a new recruit to racing and is desirous of getting together a small stable to race at Hawtnorne during the summer. Little Rebel, a two-year-old filly by Jack Hare Jr., and owned by S. J. Kelly, suc-sumbed Monday to pneumonia. Captain Hal was indulged in a gallop at three-quarters and the son of Black Toney and Wavering made a favorable impression when he ran the quarter in 25, half in 50 and three-quarters in 1:16%. J. E. Wideners Kentucky Derby hope. Ha-madan. accompanied by Altawood, was worked three-quarters in 1 :19. Jake Lowenstein sent Louis Ruber.stein ! and Rag Time out for a smart gallop at a j half mile, the pair going the distance in 51. John Middleton gave G. C. Cudahys Ken- j tucky Derby candidate.
