— « WINS HUNTINGTON DERBY • — Belpre Beats Lord Vargrave and Favorite Brilliant. •— Jones Stock Farm Stable Scores Double Victory with I.orena Marcellia and Parnell Lad. ♦ ■ ■ HUNTINGTON. W. Va.. April 11— Before j a banner crowd of racing enthusiasts, Belpre, j a chestnut colt by Ballot — Latonia. by Ogden, | which races for C. G. Talbutt and is trained by O. Pons, captured the Huntington Derby, the chief offering of a half-holiday program at the Tri-State grounds this afternoon. J. A. Parsons Lord Vargrave was second , and Mrs. W. J. Potters Brilliant, the even- i money favorite, finished third. Lord Vargrave began none too well, but i the others were away in good alignment. I Rosamond cut out the pace to the far turn, ] with Starmatia and Lord Vargrave in closest j pursuit Belpre was following, while Bril- liant. the favorite, came last. Rounding the turn for home Starmatia showed in front momentarily, when there was a general closing up from the rear. Midway of the stretch Lord Vargrave headed his rivals, but Belpre, finishing with rare courage, came on to win going away. Brilliant made a sparkling but belated rush and had Lord Vargrave driving to the limit to save second place at the end. Starmatia tired badly in the final eighth and was passed by Seths Bacon in the last sixteenth. A crowd of over five thousand journeyed to the course to witness the sport, the Derby proving the magnet to attract the record assemblage. Ideal conditions prevailed and an excellent card was provided for the occasion. The Jones Stock Farm Stable, which has figured prominently hero since the meeting opened, was again much in evidence, winning two races, the fourth and fifth, with Lorena Marcellia and Parnell Lad respectively. The first mentioned was successful in the Covernors Handicap, a supplementary attraction to the Derby. L. Wilson never made a move with Lorena Marcellia until 1 rounding the turn for home, where she responded to his call by moving up and taking the lead midway in the stretch held her opponents safe at the end. L. Wilson was also astride Parnell Lad when he won for the Jones Stock Farm Stable in the fifth race. Parnell Lad set an extrerr.ely fast pace during the early running and it nearly proved costly, as he was tiring ar.d swerving out at the end. However, he lasted to get a length decision. This was the second straight victory at this meeting fir Parnell Lad, which, like Lorena Marcellia. is by Seth and was bred at Mr. Jones Missouri farm. There was another triumph for C. G. Talbutt besidts the Derby success when his Inele Jay easily accounted for the mile and a sixteenth of the seventh race. The clrsest and best finish of the afternoon came in the final race, the favorite Messines getting up and outgaming Dahinda. Continued on twelfth pace. ♦ - WINS HUNTINGTON DERBY Continued from first page. to win by a neck after the latter had shown the way from the start. Although outpaced by Lancelot to the stretch, High Priestess finished with good courage during the run home and was re« turned an easy winner of the opening dash. Doctor Tubbs outgamed Lancelot for second place. Parthema displayed the most speed at all stages of the second race, but was ridden hard near the end to stall off Black Art and Joe Joe, both of which made game efforts to overhaul the flying leader. The Girl never left the result in seriouo doubt during the running of the third race, leading by a comfortable margin throughout. Black Ruler as easily disposed of the* tthera for second place during the stretch.
