CANADIAN RACING SEASON! 1 • To Be Inaugurated at Beautiful Woodbine Park Today. * Ontario Jockey Clnb Offers Excellent Opening Program With Historic Kings Plate Outstanding Attraction. 1 TORONTO, Ont., May 22.— With shop windows prominently displaying racing colors and cups glorious with tradition, sun browned visitors after a winter in the sunny South much in evidence on the downtown stree"ts and hotel lobbies, and their straw hats a trifle in advance of local custom, it is quite evident to the uninitiated that the opening of the Canadian racing season is at hand. It is fitting that the welcome to the visitors and the thoroughbred should fall to the lot of the Ontario Jockey Club, which holds the premier position in Canadian racing circles and whose beautiful Woodbine course makes A wonderful background to adequately greet the sport of kings. Never at this time of the year has the Ontario Jockey Club plant looked any prettier than this year with its green lawns and dandelion dotted infield. Every building around the track has been treated to a new coat of paint, the fences and rails a pretty white, contrasting vividly with, the green sward and the lake beyond. As ususal, the Ontario Jockey Club is intending its spring welcome to the horsemen and horse raising lovers with racing offerings that are much above the ordinary and I the response of racing men is reflected in I the opening day card for the only race having less than twelve named to face the starter is the valuable Aintree Steeplechase with ,000 added. However, the class of the performers in that race is such as to more than make up for the small field which would in other years be considered a good one. Overflowing barns on the Woodbine and capacity fields on opening day allay all fears that the increase in race courses in th-i United States would result in a shortage of horses in Canada during the 1925 season. After months of preparation, the classic of Canadian racing, the historic Kings Plate, is ready for decision tomorrow and of the original forty-eight nominated, fifteen have the opportunity to face the starter for the 0,000 added and the piece of plate. Until the releasing of the entries it was believed that Tom Kiddells Cloth Hall would be a sarter. Tricky Take Off still remains in, but may yet decline when the bugle calls them to the post. Without doubt the Seagram Stable with Its trio. Duchess. Gold Lands and Tamarind, will be post-time choice. The Waterloo Stable is always given staunch support, but this year its chances are exceptionally bright. There is formidable opposition to be encountered from the Fletcher pair, Fairhank and Hoi Polloi, Forecast II., Jean Crest, Catamaran, Panketa and in fact any of the fifteen programmed, as all have shown more Continued on sixteenth pace. CANADIAN RACING SEASON ConMminl from first pnse tnan .he average in their preliminary works. Next in importance to the Kings Plate in money importance istheAintreeSteeplecha.se, with ,000 added, placed second on the card so that the infield may be thrown open to tho expected trerm ndous throng, so that every one may have a good view of the Kings I Plate. While the field for the steeplechase I is small, it represents the best in timber toppers in Guingamp. Punks Green, Crumple [ II., Lieutenant Seas, Ipsal and Golden Gup, ! and they should provide a stirring contest. The days racing, which will start at 2:30 p. m. daylight saving time, after the arrival of the vice-regal party in the state carriage, preceded by postillions and outriders, will commence with the Trial Plate Handicap at three-quarters in which the Seagram Stables ; IMgit, Senator Norris and Scotch Broom, rac- j ing in the colors of II.
