I I NEW AMERICAN RECORD Winnipeg Cuts Mile and Seventy Yards Time to l:40 3/5. Displays Fine Speed Over Fast Maple Heights Track In Winning Tris Speaker Handicap. I CLEVELAND, Ohio, May 22.— In the presence of manager Tris Speaker, of the Cleve-| land Baseball club, C. E. Hudsons Winnipeg. accounted for the Tris Speaker Handicap, the feature of the program at Maple Heights Park this afternoon. Polvo was a creditable second, and Turnberry proved to be much the best of the others. Taking command in the first quarter, Winnipeg set a terrific pace for the remainder of the way, was never in serious trouble and reduced both the track and American record for the mile and seventy yards to 1 :40%. Polvo saved much ground, by going through on the inside at far turn and held the others safe thereafter. Turn-berry challenged an eighth out, but tir?d after racing up into a contending position. My Valet showed a dull performance today. Sandy Hatch quit badly in the last quarter and apparently has staled off. Having an off-day. the Cleveland baseball club attended in a body and Manager Speaker witnessed the running of the race, named after himself, from the stewards stand. Ideal conditions prevailed and the largest crowd of the week visited the course. Monastery set out to make a runaway of the sixth race, but was passed by Sweepstakes and Kendall in turn in the stretch, the former of the pair winning at the end. Making his debut at this meeting, the Jones Stock Farm Stables Captain Seth showed the way at all stages of the initial race. At the end he was doing his best, however to stall off ited Heart, which provided keen contention all the last quarter. Northern Miss outstayed Gen. Ginockio in the final test for the show honors.
