KIEV IN FINE FETTLE • Stable Companion of Osmand Creates Favorable Impression. % Candy Queen Luckily Escapes Injury — King Nadi Works Fast Three -Quarters. • LOUISVILLE. Ky., April 9— The track again was muddy at Churchill Downs today, due to more rain overnight, but as the course has a firm bottom, training operations were not hampered to any great extent. The work of preparing tlie Kentucky Derby candidates continued and. during the regular work hours, a large number of the three-year-olds were given useful trials that tested their mud running qualities. Kiev. Royal Julian. Candy Blackbird, Candy Queen and War Eagle were seen in the more important gallops and their trials were excellent. Osmand was not called on for strenuous work. The work of Kiev from the J. E. Widener stable, attracted a lot of attention and evoked favorable comment. The gray colt, with I«addi - as a pacemaker, made a fine impression when he rattled off seven-eighths in 1 X and pulled up in great condition. The pair began at the seven-eighths post and worked back to the stand. Laddie, which broke in front, was overhauled by Kiev before the first sixteenth had been covered. Kiev easily led his competitor for the remainder of the distance. In the final quarter Kiev was so eager to run that he almost unseated his rider, who was hard put to keep the colt under control. The filly almost came to grief after she broke, when a two-year-old got in her path and her rider. Leo McPermott. was forced to pull her up sharply to avoid collision and possible injury to H. T. Archibalds crack filly. Had Candy Queen been going at a rapid pace, an accident would have been unavoidable. Her fractional time was : 37%, :40. :".4. 1 31%, 1 :" 0. Itoyal Julian again gave evidence of his advanced condition and showed his mud running quality when he breezed a mile easily in 1 :49%. B McLeans War Eagle, winner of the Miami Cup. was given his first test since his arrival from New Orleans. He was sent five-eighths in the comparatively good time of 1 ;ii5%. The watches caught him at the quarter in 37% three-eighths in :39% and the half in S-.. The colt is well seasoned and ready to race whenever called upon. The outstanding trial of the morning and the most impressive of the entire spring season was when King Nadi. candidate for the rich Clark ami Grainger Memorial Handicaps, was set down or three-quarters. He negotiated the distance in the good time of 1 :15%. The live-year-old. whien has been in training all winter, displayed keen speed and proved his worth as a mud runner. He covered the quarter in 34% three-eighths in :36Ls. half in 38% five-eighths in 1:01% and breezed out the three-quarters In 1 :15%. It was the fastest three-quarters of the season. It was not excelled by any other locally trained hMW, even on a fast track. a
