ALL RECORDS BROKEN Attendance at 1927 Derby Sur ¬ passes All Previous Figures Mayor W H Thompson of Chi ¬ cago Presents Gold Trophy to Owner of Winner LOUISVILLE Ky May 14 In point of attendance the fiftythird renewal of the Kentucky Derby broke all records said Col M J Winn vicepresident and general man ¬ ager of the Kentucky Jockey Club ClubIn In point of quality the Derby field com ¬ prising as it does every great threeyearold in America has not been surpassed in the his ¬ tory of the race The nationwide interest in the Derby is very gratifying to themanage ment of the Kentucky Jockey Club for in this the home of the thoroughbred we have en deavored to promote the greatest race in America The response of the sportloving public of this country has grown each year until the crowd today fills every foot of available space in Churchill Downs We have spent 75000 this year in beautifying and enlarging the plant and it will evidently be necessary next year to greatly increase our facilities to properly take care of a hun ¬ dred thousand people peopleThe The Associated Press the International News Service the United Press the Univer ¬ sal Servce and all the other news associa ¬ tions have given the Kentucky Derby a most generous publicity which could not be paid for in money We are indebted to the press of America for their splendid support supportMAYOR MAYOR THOMPSONS EULOGY EULOGYMayor Mayor William Hale Thompson of Chi ¬ cago presented the Golden Trophy to the owner of the winner winnerMayor Mayor Thompson said This golden cup sir is the tribute of a great people to a great horse I grew up as a boy out in the broad plains of this country out in the great open spaces where they say men are men and out there we pretty soon got to know that a man didnt amount to much without a good horse But that is true everywhere The horse and the man have gone through the ages together The horse is the trusted friend the willing servant He has a quality which unfortunately so many humans lack that of loyalty He Is always ready to give his best bestThis This sir is what your fine colt did today He gave you and he gave this great outpour ¬ ing of the public a worthy example of splen ¬ did effort and splendid accomplishment You know there is a race horse named for me Big Bill Thompson lie is owned by a friend of mine in Chicago ChicagoThe The horse hasnt won as often as I have perhaps but then hes not so old Youve got to give him a chance to get in winning ways waysSeriously Seriously this Derby Day is an inspiring occasion It makes you have confidence anew in the fine spirit of fair play of the American people I am proud to be here and prouder still to present this cup to the owner of so fine a horse horseREFUSES REFUSES 100000 OFFER OFFERThere There was a wild rumor abroad that E P Wagner the Texas sportsman had purchased Rolled Stocking from J W Parrish of Mid ¬ way Kentucky The reputed price was 100000 Mr Parrish was offered a price for his Derby starter before the race but his answer was that he would be afraid to go back to Midway if he sold the son of Pen ¬ nant nantThere There was regret that the recent injury to the CJreentree Stables Saxon brought about his withdrawal and it is possible that the son of Broomstick and Homely may be away from the races for some time timeFor For a race of such magnitude as the Ken ¬ tucky Derby it is always greatly to he de ¬ sired that conditions be at the best but sel ¬ dom has there been a field for the prize where the muddy going made so little dif ¬ ference taking a line on the past perform ¬ ances of the most potential of the candidates candidatesEach Each Derby crowd is much like the one of the year before except being larger and the advance guard arrived just a bit earlier for the regulars have learned from bitter experi ¬ ence that not to be early is not to see the race even though Matt Winn has done so much to take care of the crowds Strive as he may he has never been able to entirely keep pace with the constantly growing appeal of this most picturesque and mort important of all turf classics classicsThere There will be various crowd estimates mnd of the l 27 attendance at Churchill Downs sor e estimates having been fixed at between SOOOO and lOOitOO and whether or not these estimates have been accurate the crowd present this afternoon was a larger one than any that has gone before
