ANOTHER FOR BALBOA Gentilly Stables Ballot Gelding Scores Fourth Aurora Victory Florence Mills Second and Devon Third in Homewood Handicap at Exposition Park Course AURORA 111 May 14 The Homewood Handicap was the feature of Saturdays card at Exposition Park and a field of ten started Balboa scored his fourth victory of the meet ¬ ing and won by a nose from Florence Mills in one of the closest finishes at the course this spring Florence Mills maintained second place while third place fell to J J Greeleys fastfinishing Devon DevonSoon Soon after the start Florence Mills was taken into a long lead racing up the back stretch and at one stage was eight lengths in the lead Dimple Dunkie Captain Donan and Golden Mac were the other forward con ¬ tenders and raced in nearest pursuit of the ladr Balboa was under restraint in sixth place On the lower turn Golden Mac rushed up into second place but soon tired and be ¬ gan dropping back and never figured again in the running Dimple Dunkie also showed rigns of distress and eventually tired and finished badly beaten Balboa released from restraint near the turn into the stretch then charged up along the outside of the track with his challenge and began gaining grad ¬ ually on Florence Mills MillsThe The filly after making the last turn was still three lengths in the lead but she tired fast in the final threesixteenths and Balboa wearing her down gradually caught her a fev yards from the finish and poked his nose in front of her in the last strides to take the decision in a hairline finish Devon had meanwhile come from far back and got up at the end to outfinish Cartoon and the others for third place placeOUTSIDER OUTSIDER SCORES SCORESA A rank outsider scored at long odds in the initial race when Bray Annie took the measure of Scnor Kendall and eight others at threequarters Bray Annie was one of the field horses Senor was the favored one Willies Maid was an unfortunate starter here being hopelessly left at the post postThe The Lyda Mae Stock Farms Supporter also a field horse registered another big sur ¬ prise in the second race Ridden by jockey C E Allen he led all the way to score nar ¬ rowly Jessie Belle finishing fast all but succeeded in wearing the winner down at the end Hec forced the early pace tired in the final eighth and saved third place Bill Seth by virtue of his success in the Promenade Purse an allowance affair for twoyearolds at fiveeighths became a threetime winner at the meeting In this rncc he i erformed like a good one coming from behind the leaders in the last three sixteenths to get up in the final yards to win drawing away from Elevate which out ¬ stayed Aromatic for second place in the final drive Supporting the main attraction and fourth on the card was the Naperville Purse an allowance race for threeyearolds and up ¬ ward over the threequarters mile course The Dearborn Stables Chaff racing coupled with Scoop as that stables entry won and ridden by jockey R Deprema showed the most speed in the race at all stages and after having maintained a good lead to the stretch came to the finish winner by a length and a half margin over her nearest oppo ¬ nent and was under restraint at the end endThe The Mira Monte Stock Farms Prince Ronald raced into second place while B Creechs Shasta Gold took third Jockey R Deprema scored his second straight victory for the afternoon having ri l leii the winner of the previous race The 1earborn Stable entry was second choice Shasta Gold being the most fancied one
