CRUSADER DEFEATED AGAIN Last Years Champion Fails Badly in Excelsior Handicap Finishes Unplaced Amncrjack Being Re ¬ turned the Winner Rancocas Stable Captures Valuable Youthful Stakes NEW YORK N Y May 14 The Metro ¬ politan Jockey Club offered a brilliant carjl Saturday afternoon for those who had been unable to get to Louisville for the Ken ¬ tucky Derby and the largest crowd of the meeting showed its appreciation of the pro ¬ gram that had been prepared for them While two of the races were given special prefer ¬ ence in the matter of awards and title there were four races worthy of being called an attraction attractionIt It proved to be another day of success for Rancocas Stable and Jockey Laverne Fator and the Rancocas Stables winnings were increased by 9800 through the suc ¬ cess of Ariel and Mowlee in the Youthful Stakes Its other purse was won in the second race by Celidon CelidonCrusader Crusader made his first appearance of the year in New York in the Excelsior Handicap and his performance was a distinct disap ¬ pointment to the public which had backed him heavily and he went to the post an oddson favorite The honors in the Ex ¬ celsior Handicap fell to the Belair Studs Amberjack a fouryearold son of Ambas ¬ sador IV which trainer James Fitzsimmons sent to the post in splendid condition His victory was clean cut and he was never in danger of losing at any stage of the mile and a sixteenth route routeThe The Belair colt outran the others from the rise of the barrier and he drew away into a good lead under restraint saving ground all the way He had plenty of speed in reserve at the finish The second and third portions of the purse fell to Cherry Pie and Naviga ¬ tor that great pair which has been racing so well this year for the Greentree Stable The two from Greentree Stable ran their best to see which would finish first of the two twoCrusader Crusader got away well and Fator rated him along on the outside on the lower turns At the far turn Fator sent Crusader to the inside but it was impossible to get him through and the champion of 192G finished a nonetooconspicuous fourth fourthFAILS FAILS TO RUN TO FORM FORMCrusader Crusader did not run true to form and Fator was unable to bring out the speed that was so conspicuous in his races last year yearThe The Rancocas Stable completed a double for the afternoon and added 9800 to its earnings during the meeting when Ariel cap ¬ tured the Youthful Stakes Nine of the most highly esteemed juveniles now on the metropolitan circuit went to the barrier and the public displayed strong preference for the pair from Jobstown JobstownThe The field was gotten away promptly and all the youngsters were on their good behavior except H P Whitneys Groucher which was left at une post Stephanus took Walter J Salmons colors out for the lead and kept command until the final turn for home when Fator brought Ariel up and in a stirring drive sent him to the front frontStephanus Stephanus showed a good race ran con ¬ sistently but was outclassed by the winner Mowlee got away in a jam but was straight ¬ ened out early and when entirely free showed plenty of speed and was going very fast at the finish finishDistraction Distraction was off with the first ones from the barrier and then lost ground steadily showing a lack of speed and finshed well behind the others Rosinante ran evenly and Pondy was a trailer trailerThe The Rancocas Stable and Laverne Fator each added another winner to their length ¬ ening list when Celidon carried the white jacket with green collar and cuffs to an easy victory in the second race of the aft ¬ ernoon The Rancocas gelding got away first but Fator took him back of the pace in the early stages and Sandy went to the front where he stayed until the halfmile post when Fator called upon Celidon and the son of Negofol easily went to the lead The Rancocas gelding was going away at the finish but Sandy was showing more speed than any of the others and was racing gamely though clearly outclassed Spanish Gold ran evenly all the way but was never in the running with the first two
