SHASTA LAD WINNER Diminutive Philpot Pilots Brown Racer to Easy Victory Penthorn Defeats Good Band in inMaplewood Maplewood Purse Respress RespressFirstTime FirstTime Starter Wins COLLINSVILLE 111 June 7 The Brown Shasta Stock Farm accounted for the most important race offered by the Fairmount Jockey Club this afternoon when Shasta Lad raced to an easy victory in the Mis ¬ sissippi Claiming Purse fifth on the card The threeyearold son of Harmonique rid ¬ den by the diminutive jockey H Philpot took the measure of the Audley Farms Word of Honor C Irbys Montello and four other starters among which was Henry Sommers the latter ruling a topheavy favorite Henry Sommers raced poorly and far below his true form and his performance was disappoint ¬ ing ingShasta Shasta Lad and Word of Honor were among the first to leave the barrier and Word of Honor quickly took command while leader Montello followed in third position with the others strung out Word of Honor and Shasta Lad began to draw away from the others on the far turn and staged a stir ¬ ring struggle for the early leadership Word of Honor had the mcst early speed and showed the way to the final turn while Shasta Lad raced lapped on the leaders on the outside Straightening out for the final drive Shasta Lad gradually wore down Word of Honor and passing him an eighth out took command and held the race safe to the end Word of Honor was not threatened for second place while Montello was easily third thirdTRACK TRACK FAST FASTThe The track continued in a fast condition over which high grade racing was provided and was witnessed by a large crowd of the followers of the sport from tn se parts partsA A big surprise was furnished in the open ¬ ing race by Whalen Brothers Miss Maggie which ridden by jockey H Elston and coup ¬ led in the mutuel field scored at long odds Flames another outsider raced into second place while Holly Boy wound up third Sieg Margon set the pace for the first half mile of the threequarters mile closely followed by Miss Maggie Holly Boy and Beau Galant were in close pursuit while Flames was well backed At the head of the stretch Miss Maggie challenged Sieg Margon and took the lead and was never headed winning easily Flames sprinted down the stretch closing a big gap and just got up in the final strides to nose out Holly Boy Powder was the favored one but he raced far back all the way wayThe The second race at one mile and fashioned for maiden threeyearolds and upward wit ¬ nessed another victory for the combination of owner J B Respess and jockey L Pichon J when the latter piloted the fiveyearold first time starter Colonel Steward to a rather easy victory over the nine others which started Colonel Steward was rushed into the lead by Pichon as the field made the first turn and continuing to hod his lead the son of Luke McLuke made every post a winning one Colonel Steward was facing the barrier for the first time and was a pro ¬ nounced good thing ruling a well backed favorite Dynamo raced into second place while Wood Fairy an extreme outsider was third thirdROUGH ROUGH RACE RACEA A rough race resulted in the third over a mile and a sixteenth for which there was nine starters Much rough riding crowding and interference was indulged in by the riders Arragosa and Blarney Stone being the chief sufferers 13 E Watsons Firth of Tay turned up winner defeating AV M Cains Arragosa which finished second while Harned Bros Blarney Stone landed in the third place Lucky Run and Alard each were in the lead in the early stages before the final turn was reached where Firth of Tay took command never to be headed headedArragosa Arragosa and Blarney Stone raced back of the leaders but suffered from interference and were unable to race at their best until the stretch had been reached where they quickly closed a gap and finished second and third respectively Arragosa was heavily backed ruling an oddson choice and jockey L Pichon had the mount on him himThe The Maplewood Purse fourth on the card an allowance affair for twoyoarolds wit ¬ nessed the Penthorn Stables good colt Pen thorn easily taking the measure of Aviator Lady Loose and three other youngsters over the fiveeighths distance The winner was in the lead throughout and sprinted away from his opponent at will In the stretch win ¬ ning in a canter Penthorn was an over ¬ whelming choice incidentally tho shortest price winner of the meeting He qualified for participation in the Valley Stakes for two yearolds which will be decided Saturday Aviator held second place safe all the way fcut could never threaten the winner
